GROWING PAINS: MIKE'S CHOICE {PART 1 OF 2} {SIXTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The sixth season premiere in this comedy series about the adventures of the Seaver family of Long Island, headed by psychiatrist dad Jason and reporter mom Maggie. In the first half of this two-part episode, Jason and Maggie confront Mike when they find his unopened college registration form. They believe he wishes to drop out of college to pursue an acting career, but he convinces them that he is applying to a state college to get his teaching degree, which meets with their approval. In actuality he is pursuing acting and auditions for an off-Broadway play. Meanwhile, Carol struggles with her first week at Columbia University, particularly her long and arduous commute. Mike comes home to announce that he got a part in the play; Jason and Maggie are excited until they learn that Mike lied about attending state college, intending to pursue acting full-time. Jason in particular feels betrayed and angry.
Later, Jason goes up to talk to Mike about his decision. He apologizes for losing his temper, but points out that it's impractical for Mike to pursue acting without a college degree to fall back on. Mike insists that he can get by on his acting talent alone, and that Jason wants him to do what he wants rather than what he thinks is best for him. They cannot reach a compromise, and Jason offers him an ultimatum: if he wants to be able to stay at home, he will have to work towards some sort of degree in addition to his acting. The next morning, Jason finds that Mike has packed up all of his things and left. The episode ends as Mike drives into New York City. To be continued. Includes commercials.
