FAMILY MATTERS: RACHEL'S PLACE {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about the Winslows, an African-American family living in Chicago next door to their annoying neighbor, Steve Urkel.

Rachel is upset at the family’s mounting expenses and searches for a job in order to contribute. Laura gets a part-time job as a waitress at Leroy’s, much to her parents’ displeasure, although she gets them to agree to allow her to try it for a month, quitting if her academic performance is adversely affected. Laura is excited until she learns that Urkel has also requested and received a job at Leroy’s. The family comes to visit while Laura is working, much to her embarrassment. She foists Urkel on them instead. Soon she and Urkel get into a tussle over a stack of dishes, accidentally breaking them in the process; Urkel’s bumbling causes further accidents. Leroy is incensed at Urkel for constantly breaking his dishes, but decides to deduct the cost from his paycheck instead of firing him. While Leroy is out Urkel attempts to cook a meal using the grill, inadvertently lighting the entire restaurant on fire. Firefighters are able to extricate Laura and Urkel from the blaze.

Harriette and Carl rush to the scene to make sure Laura is okay. The fire eventually subsides and they enter the burned-out building with Urkel. Urkel is questioned by a fire inspector and Leroy returns, incensed at Urkel. He feels he is too old to start his restaurant over again and says he plans to use the insurance money to retire to Florida. After several days, Urkel becomes persona non grata around the Winslow house, and Rachel continues to despair at being unable to find a job. Urkel hopes to solve both their problems by suggesting that Rachel buy up Leroy’s restaurant in order to rebuild it and establish a new business. He and Rachel make a pitch to Carl and Harriette explaining the idea and asking them to contribute capital as business partners in the venture. They are doubtful about the idea’s likelihood of success but are impressed when Urkel and Rachel unveil concept art of the potential restaurant. Carl and Harriette discuss the matter and want to go forward with the investment, but Carl reveals that he lost a great deal of money via poor stock investments. However, Urkel manages to secure the investment from Estelle. Soon “Rachel’s Place” is built and the Winslow family gathers for its grand opening. Includes commercials.
