TOMORROW WITH TOM SNYDER {JOHNNY CARSON} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night topical interview programs hosted by Tom Snyder. This program marks the "Tomorrow" show's final airing from Burbank, California, after which it moves to a New York City studio. Snyder's guest is Johnny Carson, host of "The Tonight Show," with which "Tomorrow" shares a soundstage. Carson discusses the following topics, among others: his apprehension about succeeding famed host Jack Paar; his "unique" show style and decision not to make great changes from Paar's program; his past work on "Who Do You Trust?" with "Tonight Show" sidekick Ed McMahon; his frequent comments on contemporary news events; his focus on comedy and avoidance of using the show as a "sounding board" for political opinions; the "risk" of his opening comedy monologue and the audiences' unpredictable reactions; a false rumor about his early days in radio; his dislike of doing radio commercials and an on-air quip disliked by his show's sponsors; his opinions on censors and "dirty words," including the contrast between standard profanity and emotionally hurtful words; his infamously private nature and "gunshy" attitude towards the press; the frequent inaccuracies in printed interviews and comments; his experiences being recognized in public; his love for his work and dislike of false humility from famous figures; his reaction to an NBC ad referring to him as a "king" and to other press comments; the idea of competition between late-night hosts and other entertainers; how long he plans to continue hosting the show; the unlikelihood of a return to NYC; and advice on enjoying life in the Big Apple.

Snyder then closes the show by remarking on its history and thanking the large crew, whose names are all displayed onscreen as the episode concludes. Includes commercials and promos.
