WHO'S THE BOSS?: IT'S SOMEBODY'S BIRTHDAY {FIFTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies about advertising executive Angela Bower and her live-in housekeeper -- former pro-baseball player Tony Micelli -- and their respective families. It's Tony's birthday and he's gotten himself rather excited about it. When his old van suffers the latest of a long line of malfunctions, he resolves to buy a new car. He test-drives a sleek new car to the driveway to show to the family, accompanied by Doug Shaffer, the car salesman. Tony is overly eager about owning the new car, but Angela warns him that his exuberance will ruin his bargaining position. With her help, he manages to get a better deal for the car from Doug. However, he later decides not to purchase the car, as it is still too expensive and he could fix up his van for a fraction of the cost. Tony's birthday party begins and Angela reveals that she purchased the new car for Tony as a gift. He feels he cannot accept it as it is too extravagant a present, but they later work out a deal wherein they divide the payments for the car evenly. Thus Tony decides to keep the new car and puts out an advertisement to sell his old van. However, Tony finds himself highly protective of the van, and turns down each prospective buyer for one reason or another. That night, Tony sits alone in the van before he is visited by Samantha. He explains that his unwillingness to part with the van comes from the many happy memories it symbolizes for him, showing her mementos from his wedding and Samantha's childhood. He convinces Samantha and Angela that he cannot sell the van, as it means too much to him. While Samantha and Angela head inside, Tony is visited by Mitch, a young man looking to buy the car. Tony soon discovers that the details of Mitch's life seem to mirror his own at that age, and he decides to sell the van to him after all. Angela and Samantha eavesdrop and agree with Tony's decision. The episode ends as Tony bids farewell to the van. Includes commercials.
