WONDER YEARS, THE: SUMMER SONG {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The third season premiere in this series about Kevin Arnold, a young boy growing up in the suburbs during the late 1960s, whose experiences, thoughts, and reactions are recalled by the adult Kevin, who narrates and makes wry observations throughout. In this episode, in the summer of 1969, the Arnolds prepare for their annual trip to Ocean City, New Jersey. Karen is disinterested, however, and Wayne more interested in his new girlfriend, and Kevin is dejected by a letter from Winnie saying that she has met someone new in Maine. Only Paul is excited, but he soon suffers carsickness. Once at the beach, the family is dismayed by the rundown hotel and the corny nautical-themed restaurant, but Jack and Norma encourage the kids to have fun anyway. Paul reacts badly to the fish and is forced to stay inside, and a depressed Kevin reminisces about the family's happier days, but then encounters a pretty 15-year-old girl named Teri who takes an interest in him, and he tells her that he is fourteen.
At dinner, Kevin asks his mother if he can spend the evening on the boardwalk with Teri, and Norma agrees. The two lovebirds spend a blissful evening going on rides and taking photobooth pictures, and though he is concerned about their age difference, Teri seems unconcerned and they end up kissing on the beach. However, she then reveals that she must return to Albuquerque the following day, and Kevin is crushed. She promises to write to him, and he notes the "wonderful" feeling of first heartbreak. Back at home, Kevin encounters Winnie, who reveals that she and her summer fling broke up, which seems to cheer him up. He then receives a letter from Teri, which he treasures along with their pictures, though reflects that she only ever wrote to him once. Includes commercials.
