APPOINTMENT WITH ADVENTURE: CURTAIN OF FEAR (TV)

Summary

One in this live dramatic anthology series of adventures set in various American and international locales. During a chase, a policeman is shot to death by a criminal named Mike Lawton. The police discover a newspaper clipping in Lawton's room pertaining to the opening night of a Broadway play starring Nora Adams, produced by her fiancée John Bedlow. They warn Bedlow that Lawton might show up at some point during the show, and Bedlow tries to see to it that Nora is safe. He keeps the news secret from the cast and crew so as not to add to their nervousness. Nora in particular is somewhat jumpy. Bedlow does not mention anything about Lawton to her, but she recounts that she went out with him years ago until she learned that he was a serial killer. He tried to choke her but she was rescued and never saw him again. Bedlow tries to conceal his concern for Nora upon hearing this. She opens her window and is approached by a kid named Joey on the fire escape who badgers her for an autograph. She relents and agrees to send his autograph book back to him downstairs. Mike Lawton enters Nora's dressing room while she prepares for the show's first act, much to her horror. He says he needs a large sum of money from her so he can get out of town and avoid the police. To that end, he attempts to kidnap her at gunpoint to take her back to her apartment and pawn her jewelry. She tries to stymie his plan by changing into the wrong costume to alert others that something is wrong, but it doesn't seem to work. Bedlow enters and Mike hides, forcing Nora to try to get rid of him and allay his suspicions about her increasing agitation. Nora manages to write out a message for help inside Joey's autograph book and gives it to him when he climbs up the fire escape to retrieve it. He calls the police and distracts Mike long enough for Nora to get away. Mike then finds himself cornered by several police officers and is shot, falling off the fire escape to his death. The episode ends as Nora decides to go on with the show, reasoning that after all the commotion it is now "just another opening night." Includes commercials.
