MYSTERIOUS CITIES OF GOLD, THE: THE END OF THE CITY OF GOLD {SERIES FINALE}
Summary
One in this animated series set in the 16th Century, about a young boy and his friends on a sea voyage to the New World in search of the legendary Seven Cities of Gold. Tao gives the High Priest his golden jar, which he believes only he can open. Meanwhile, Kalmec places the Great Treasure in the center of the solar reactor as per Menator’s instructions, thus activating it. It provides power to their base, and Menator instructs Kalmec to find Esteban and the others just before he dies. The reactor overloads and starts melting through into the ground. The High Priest realizes what has happened when he sees Tao’s jar glowing, and warns that he must reach the Mountain of the Burning Shield to shut down the reactor before it is too late. He explains that the jar is part of the control mechanism which can deactivate the reactor, and if left unchecked it will melt into the earth’s crust, causing massive tectonic disturbances and the expulsion of a toxic gas which will kill all life on earth. The people of the City of Gold make a stretcher to carry the wounded High Priest to the mountain to accomplish his mission. Sancho and Pedro are ordered to help out, and they chide Gaspar and Gomez for stopping to collect gold from the city during the crisis. Tremors begin and Kalmec watches helplessly as the reactor overloads. He is killed when the chamber is smashed into rubble by the earthquake. Everyone rushes along with the High Priest to the mountain, but Sancho and Pedro notice that Mendoza is missing. Mendoza emerges from the woods and notices the attendants of the High Priest standing outside the city watching it from afar. Mendoza demands to know why they are not protecting the High Priest, and they reply that they are acting in accordance with his wishes; the City of Gold is all but lost, and they must monitor it to ensure its destruction. They reveal that the real High Priest died three years ago and is buried in a vault beneath the city, and Mendoza demands to know the identity of his “impostor." The High Priest and company stop just before the mountain, which has already fallen victim to the deadly gasses released by the reactor. The Priest insists on going the rest of the way alone so as not to endanger the others. Before he leaves, Esteban inquires about his father, but the Priest tells him that he did not stay in the City of Gold. He makes a cryptic remark about Esteban’s name before heading into the mountain, and Esteban is pulled back by the others to avoid the fumes. The Priest’s attendants reveal to Mendoza that Esteban’s father was the one who replaced the High Priest, who remained in the City of Gold believing that Esteban would find him there and they would one day be reunited. Mendoza begs them not to reveal this information to Esteban, so as not to upset him further. As the High Priest makes his way towards the reactor, the devastation continues. A violent earthquake and volcanic eruption claims the City of Gold, reducing it to slag. Gaspar and Gomez are killed attempting to get away with a boatload of gold. Despite the intense heat, the High Priest manages to use the jar to reset the reactor’s control rods, deactivating it but claiming his life in the process. As Mendoza, Sancho, and Pedro view the terrible destruction wrought on the City of Gold, Mendoza reveals that he saved a sackful of gold for themselves. Esteban, Zia, and Tao prepare to set off in the Golden Condor to face their next big adventure: crossing the Pacific Ocean. Mendoza warns them that there will be great danger, but Esteban is unafraid. They promise to reunite one day in the tavern in Barcelona where they first met. The episode ends as Esteban, Zia, and Tao take off over the Pacific Ocean in the Golden Condor in search of further adventures. Commercials deleted.
