ST. ELSEWHERE: TIME HEALS: PART 1 (TV)

Summary

One in this medical drama series set in St. Eligius hospital in Boston. In the first half of this two-part episode, in 1935, Father Joseph McCabe eagerly prepares for the new hospital's dedication, annoying the monsignor with his high spirits. In the present, the doctors prepare for the fiftieth anniversary as Morrison, still on crutches from his knee surgery, assists Terence O'Casey, who has been suffering strange headaches. Rosenthal talks with Meredith, who is conducting an oral retrospective of St. Eligius, explaining that she arrived from England in 1965 and encountered a young Hawkins while working in administration. A younger Craig reunites with Westphall, who reveals that he has recently married, and Auschlander tends to a younger, frantic Terence, brought in by his then-girlfriend Helen after taking some bad acid. Current-day Terence tells Morrison that he and his own son were born in St. Eligius, adding that his father died of a heart condition and his sister of a mysterious ailment, and suddenly realizes that he cannot move his legs. In 1935, Father McCabe gives a stirring speech about the new hospital's goals of "compassion and comfort," and in '85, Morrison urges Helen to call their estranged son, Kevin. He wonders if Terence has Guillain-Barré, as Colonel Cochrane did, but Chandler tells him to keep digging.

Rosenthal comforts a badly-tripping Terence in '65, and Auschlander convinces Craig to leave Boston General and return to St. Eligius as Chief of Surgery, reminding him that his mentor Dr. Domedion wanted him for the position. Terence reacts coldly when Kevin arrives to check on him, and Morrison is annoyed to find that the CAT scan technician is out to lunch. In '35, McCabe takes an impromptu confession from a man worried about the morality of birth control, and present-day Craig scolds Morrison for his handling of Terence's case as Meredith interview Westphall, who tells her that he became Director of Medicine in 1975. Maureen brings young Tommy and Lizzie to visit their father, while elsewhere Craig boasts to his interns about their impressive new bypass machine. In the evening, Westphall returns home and attempts to communicate with Tommy, and when Maureen fails to return home from a trip to the store, he receives an upsetting phone call. Craig lectures Patrick O'Casey, Terence's father, about his bad health habits and informs him that he will be his first bypass patient. In '85, Terence has an allergic reaction to the CAT scan dye, and Helen confides to Morrison that her husband and son have been feuding ever since Kevin came out as gay.

Hawkins puts up a poster about a recently-kidnapped young girl, and Westphall tells Meredith about his personal and professional struggles in his first year as Director. In '35, McCabe argues with the monsignor about his unusually liberal views as the head of a Catholic hospital, and in the present, Morrison complains about the many setbacks in Terence's case, feeling that he is being prevented from giving him proper care. In '75, Auschlander gently counsels a heartbroken Westphall, explaining that Maureen is irreversibly brain-dead from the accident, and Westphall later makes the difficult decision to unplug the machines and let her go. Craig smugly tells the O'Casey's that Patrick's bypass was a great success, though in the present Terence stops breathing and Morrison quickly intubates him. In the hallway, he is stunned to see a strange man leading Pete away by the hand, and they escape into an elevator as Morrison frantically chases them. Commercials deleted.
