Summary
A concert film of Paul Simon and guests in Zimbabwe, playing music from his “Graceland” album, as well as music of South Africa. Simon is joined by several guests, including: Hugh Masekela, an African jazz musician and political activist, exiled from South Africa for his opposition to the oppressive government; Miriam Makeba, a.k.a. “Mama Africa,” a famous African singer exiled from South Africa 27 years ago who also campaigns for an end to apartheid; and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, an African a capella group. Songs played include: “Tonwnship Jive”; “Boy in the Bubble”; “Gumboots”; “Whispering Bells”; “Bring Back Nelson Mandela” by Masekela; “Crazy Love, Volume II”; “I Know What I Know”; “Jikela Emaweni” and “Soweto Blues” by Makeba; “African Skies” by Makeba and Simon; “Nomathemba” and “Hello My Baby” by Ladysmith Black Mambazo; “Homeless” by Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Simon; “Graceland”; “You Can Call Me Al”; “Stimela” by Masekela; “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes” by Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Simon; and “Nkosi Sikeleli Africa.” This selection from the Alan Gerry Cable Collection has been made available by the Gerry Foundation, Inc.
