HAPPY DAYS: THE NOT MAKING OF A PRESIDENT (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies about life in the 1950s. In this episode, Richie sees Ralph and Potsie supporting Democrat Adlai Stevenson, simply because they think it will get them more women than if they support Republican Dwight Eisenhower. Richie doesn’t feel like he can support a presidential candidate for insincere reasons though. That changes when he tries to ask out Debbie and finds her to be a Stevenson supporter. At dinner, Howard wonders who Richie supports, while revealing how and why Eisenhower is his guy. The next day, Richie reveals to Debbie that he is now “leaning” toward Stevenson. Potsie and Ralph know Richie is supporting Stevenson only because of his crush on Debbie. When Richie starts spouting Stevenson statistics, Debbie asks Richie to speak at a Junior Citizens rally at Arnold’s. Howard is furious that Richie is even considering Stevenson, and soon father and son are having it out. Marion wants Richie to apologize for arguing with Howard but Richie refuses to apologize for his principles. That night, Howard and Marion discuss Richie’s opinions, Howard thinking his son should follow family tradition and be a Republican. Soon, even Marion begins thinking her husband is narrow-minded. However, the next day, Howard and Marion go to hear Richie speak in favor of Stevenson. Next, Fonz speaks in favor of Eisenhower. After Stevenson loses, Debbie is distraught, revealing that she can now never date Richie because it would just continually remind her of Stevenson’s loss. Then, Howard comes to console Richie and take him out for pizza. Finally, Marion reveals to Howard that she voted for Stevenson. Includes commercials.
