JOHNNY RINGO: COFFIN SAM (TV)

Summary

One in this western drama series about gunslinger Johnny Ringo and his adventures as the sheriff of Velardi, Arizona. The notorious gunslinger Coffin Sam Sabine rides into town, famous for having killed eleven men in shootouts. He seems intrigued by the possibility of a gunfight with Johnny. He visits Johnny at the sheriff's office and claims that he regrets his ways and that his hand is going stiff. He fears that when someone inevitably arrives to challenge him to a shootout, he won't be able to defend himself. He offers Johnny money to intentionally lose a gunfight with him, thus making potential challengers too afraid to fight him. Johnny balks at this proposal and throws Sam out of his office. A young Nebraskan farmer named Billy Counts rides into town, and the townsfolk are amused by his speech and mannerisms. He claims that he wants to be a gunfighter and has come to challenge Coffin Sam. He demonstrates his prowess with his revolvers, but Johnny arrives and jails Billy, confiscating his guns. Cully attempts to dissuade Billy from being a gunslinger, but is unsuccessful. That night, Johnny discovers that Sam shot a rancher named Bart Agar at the saloon. Sam claims it was self-defense, and the assembled saloon patrons corroborate his story. In private, Sam confides in Johnny that due to his stiff hand he was barely able to take down Bart and that if he were to be challenged again, he would surely be killed. The next day, Bart's wife Mary tells Johnny and Cully that Sam murdered Bart. She explains that the confrontation between the two of them was staged by Sam, who offered to relieve the Agar's financial woes if Bart allowed him to wound him in a gunfight, but Bart was murdered instead. Johnny decides to confront Sam in the street, bringing Billy along to watch. He reveals the circumstances of Bart's murder to everyone assembled. Sam tricks Johnny into letting his guard down, but Johnny is too fast and shoots Sam dead. Billy, unsettled by the sight of Sam's dead body, decides not to become a gunslinger. Commercials deleted.
