CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE {JOANNE WOODWARD} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program features special guest Joanne Woodward.
The episode begins as Burnett takes the stage and chats with the audience. In the first sketch, an installment of "The Family," Eunice returns home with pal Midge Gibson from a long afternoon at the Topsy-Turvy bar, and Eunice invites her friend to stay for dinner before remembering that Ed has gone to retrieve Mama, who is no fan of Midge. Eunice asks Midge, who is divorced and childless, about her various "flings" and the "magic" of passionate romance, which she herself hasn't quite experienced, and Midge ponders getting remarried. Ed and Thelma arrive, and Eunice urges her husband to keep the peace as Thelma offers several pointed comments about Midge's "sense of value." As tensions flare, Eunice admits that she was hoping to be "picked up" at the scandalous Topsy-Turvy bar. Midge reveals her own brief fling with Ed back in high school, and she finally departs the Harper home in frustration, leaving Eunice with her annoying relatives.
Next, an upper-class couple whose loyal servants perform every possible duty for them begin to fight over the dinner table, forcing the exasperated maid and butler to "act out" their violent disagreement and eventual double suicide — after which the couple decides to make up. At a fancy dance party, wallflowers Clarice and Theresa try to hide their disappointment in not being asked to dance; they sing "Why Can't I" and "Be A Buddy," eventually deciding to befriend one another to get through the embarrassing evening.
Next, Mr. Tudball attempts to teach secretary Miss Wiggins to use the intercom, explaining that he has an important meeting and needs her to buzz him with a fake phone call should a difficult question arise with his guest. She is bewildered by both the intercom machine and the complexity of his request. Eventually, he demands that they switch places so that he can demonstrate his plan, and Miss Wiggins, deciding that her "secretary" has gone "tyoo far" in failing at simple tasks, fires him.
Finally, Burnett, Lawrence, and Woodward perform "Everything Old is New Again" in an elaborate musical number with 1930s-style costumes. Burnett then closes the show by singing her signature good-night song and adding Woodward's autograph to her guest book. Commercials deleted.
