ABC NOVELS FOR TELEVISION: NORTH AND SOUTH: BOOK II: PART 1 (TV)

Summary

The first installment of this six-part miniseries, a sequel to the 1985 series of the same name and based on the novels by John Jakes, which portrays the tumultuous years of the American Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, and focuses on two extended families: the Mains of South Carolina and the Hazards of Pennsylvania.

In this episode, in June 1861, two months after the attack on Fort Sumpter, Brett is upset to learn that Billy has been reassigned to a dangerous sharpshooter unit, though he assures her that the conflict will be over quickly. In South Carolina, Orry bids farewell to Madeline, promising to marry her "once this is over," and departs with Charles, while nearby Justin accepts a position as a colonel and begins training young soldiers. George, also a colonel now, is lauded for his position at an extravagant party thrown by his family, though his sister-in-law Isabel and brother Stanley continue secretly plotting against him. Orry visits General Lee and "President" Jefferson Davis, who worry that the North will "slowly squeeze them to death" with strategic blockades, and Davis asks Orry to use his factory experience to help with their "war machine." In West Virginia, Charles and Ambrose are sent on a scouting mission and soon encounter brave Augusta Barclay, a widow who is transporting medicine to the troops despite her personal disapproval of the war. In D.C., Virgilia is offended to find that she is considered "the wrong sort of woman" to join the nursing corps, thanks to her complex past, and she turns to the influential Congressman Greene for help. Greene and Virgilia run into George, Billy, Brett and Constance at dinner, and though Billy and George try to make amends with their sister, she rejects their affections and their moderate politics.

In Richmond, Ashton and James attend Jefferson Davis' party, and Ashton is furious when James damages his political future by arguing with "dictator" Davis about states' rights. Bent appears and, expressing similar hatred of Davis, invites James to invest in a "confidential venture," namely luxury ships, and while James deems the idea "unpatriotic," Ashton assures Bent that she has her own money and her own views. Justin ruthlessly trains his soldiers and is enraged when one man mocks his lack of "family," and as Madeline bonds with her mother-in-law-to-be Clarissa and is relieved to find that she isn't bothered by her racial secret, Justin bursts into the Main home to kidnap her, setting fire to their barn as a distraction. The slaves rush to douse the fire and help an injured Clarissa, though Cuffy points out the absurdity of helping one's oppressors as Justin drags Madeline back "home," claiming that he has changed his ways. Ashton visits Bent and learns that her brother and his best pal were his enemies at West Point, and when Ashton mentions Madeline's plans to divorce Justin and marry Orry, Bent smugly notes that he "knows something about her." She offers him a bank draft for the investment plan, promising to give him much more in the future.

Brett learns of her mother's injury and Madeline's disappearance as Billy teams up with aspiring young drummer boy Tom and arrives at his new post in D.C., where he immediately makes trouble by accidentally insulting his commanding officer, humorless Colonel Hiram Berdan. George observes as Lincoln and his men debate the effectiveness of the blockades as well as the use of new weapons like a repeating rifle, and Lincoln sadly notes that the fight will be "brother against brother." Only July 21, Northern civilians gather in Virginia to watch the first major battle of the war at Bull Run Creek, assuming that it will be a brief and entertaining fight, but everyone receives a brutal reality check when "all hell breaks loose" and the disorganized Northerners suffer a violent and humiliating defeat. George narrowly manages to save his family, and they survey the carnage in astonishment. Includes commercials and promos.
