PEYTON PLACE {JOE'S DEATH IS REVEALED; NORMAN SUSPECTED} (TV)

Summary

One in this nighttime serial drama about the residents of a New England town, based on the novel by Grace Metalious. In this episode, Doris announces to her stunned dinner party that Joe Chernak has been found dead on the wharf in an apparent accident. Mrs. Chernak is taken home and the party dissolves, and Constance and Elliot privately admit that Joe "looked for trouble." Allison is shocked by the news, and she helps put an upset Kim to bed. The Carsons leave, and the Schusters discuss the incident, with Doris shaken at the idea of losing a child. Carson heads off to the newspaper despite the late hour, planning to work on the story about Joe. Steven tells Betty that he took a "calculated risk" taking her back into the house for the party and asks her to discuss her "deep, dark secret" with him, but she refuses and returns home to her mother. Julie asks about the party and Betty reveals the truth about Joe. She suddenly decides to leave again and asks her mother to trust her, declining to reveal where she is going. Rita encounters a trouble Rod as she searches for Norman, and when he arrives, he seems entirely unaware of Joe's death. He swears that though he was known to hate Joe, he was at the library with Allison and Kim all night and did not kill him. Rita states that she believes him, and when he takes her home, she admits that seeing Joe's body disturbed her. Norman tells her that he saw his mother die, and when she asks about her, he wonders if she suspects him after all. He says that it is only "dumb luck" that he did not kill Joe, and Rita confesses her guilt, saying that they "never would have made it" with Joe around.

They agree that they are "all right now," but Ada appears and scolds Rita for running off, saying she took an unnecessary risk. She mentions Rita's conversation with Sergeant Goddard, but Rita assures Norman that she only told him that she had not seen anything suspicious. Mike gives Stella some sedatives for herself and her mother, and Goddard arrives to question the family. Stella admits that she did not know her brother's friends, but says there was "nothing unusual" about him. When Goddard talks to Mrs. Chernak, she swears that he was a "good boy" and was well-liked, but Stella interrupts and says that Joe is not on trial. She then tells Goddard that Rod came by looking for Joe earlier that day and suggests that Goddard question him, and when he leaves, she returns the pills to Mike. At the same time, Betty sneaks out to visit Rod to discuss the incident. Includes commercials.
