ST. ELSEWHERE: LUST ET VERITAS (TV)

Summary

One in this medical drama series set in St. Eligius hospital in Boston. In the second half of this two-part episode, Ehrlich summons the clueless Elliot and sets him to work on a patient who has overdosed on drugs, and then reprimands Fiscus for his tardiness. Barry Dom arrives and meets with Westphall, explaining that he is appealing his dismissal from the residency program, hoping to get some of his evaluations changed. Mr. Singleton continues his aggressive attempts to rehabilitate his wife after her stroke, and Morrison comments that her progress has been amazing, though he cautions Singleton not to push her too hard. Craig lectures Ehrlich for his poor care of a bypass patient, Mr. Sirkin, and a new plastics doctor, Caldwell, assists with a young girl's case. He encourages Armstrong to pursue the specialty, and the women all seemed charmed by him. Craig talks with his heart transplant patient, Eve Leighton, and is uncharacteristically kind as he tells her that she will likely do well, though he then snaps at his residents for complaining about the long rounds process. Chandler and Cavanero work on a patient who has taken a turn for the worse, and Dom interrupts to ask if Cavanero will consider changing his evaluations. She remains firm, however, saying that what she wrote was not unfair. Joan Halloran informs Craig that he will be participating in a television interview about the heart transplant that very night, much to his annoyance. At the same time, Mr. Singleton continues working on his wife, helping her to eat her lunch.

Craig puts Leighton into isolation to avoid the risk of infection, and Auschlander talks to Craig about the significant pressure on him to succeed in the surgery. He suggests that Craig find other doctor to take his place in a board meeting so that he can relax, and Craig seeks out Caldwell, introducing him to Halloran and foisting the meeting off on him. Dom talks to Armstrong again and asks if she will talk to Cavanero for him, but when she attempts to explain that Dom's girlfriend suffered a nervous breakdown during her residency, causing him to be distracted, Cavanero points out that he had many different romantic partners and was sloppy in his work. Upset, Armstrong accuses Cavanero of treating him unfairly because she was, in fact, one of those girlfriends. The Singletons' son attempts to help with his mother's physical therapy, but his father snaps at him for doing it incorrectly, and the two argue. Morrison intervenes and tells the son to get along with his father, as he too is suffering and needs support. Craig yells at a nutritionist for not helping Leighton properly, and then lectures Ehrlich once again for a small mistake, saying he is a danger to patients. Ehrlich vents his frustrations to Auschlander, who seems to be sympathetic. Westphall and Cavanero discuss Dom, and Westphall tells her about his attempts to propose to his wife, admitting that he too was at times distracted by his personal life in his early days. Leighton's family expresses the desire for a second opinion on her case, naming a certain doctor in Philadelphia, but Craig unsurprisingly proclaims himself to be the best and notes that he himself trained the other surgeon.

Elliot panics when confronted with an emergency, and Fiscus is patient with him, explaining that the job can be highly stressful. As Craig does his TV interview, Caldwell and Halloran share a romantic evening together, revealing that they have been together for some time and pretended to be strangers to avoid suspicion. Cavanero's patient dies, and she is paged away from the scene, only to be attacked by a drunken and bitter Dom. Armstrong stitches her up, and the other women tease her that she now can visit the "primo" Caldwell, the plastics expert. Leighton grades papers and talks with her sister, who then admits to Rosenthal that she thinks Leighton is downplaying the seriousness of her health. Mr. Sirkin prepares to leave after Craig's successful bypass, but when they visit him on rounds, he reveals that Craig forgot to remove a suture, which embarrasses him greatly. Halloran leaves the hospital and Westphall comments on Caldwell's successful work with her, unaware of their relationship. He then talks to Leighton about her surgery and she explains that she is at peace with her fate either way, trusting in Craig's abilities. Mrs. Singleton suffers a fall when her husband attempts to get her out of bed, and Morrison checks on her, once again telling her husband to be more patient with her. He refuses to let her be a "quitter," and she angrily tells him that she hates him, causing him to leave. Includes commercials.
