KTLA ARCHIVE REEL #11: A) FANTASTIC STUDIOS, INK
(1950); B) SANDY DREAMS (1948) (TV)
Summary
Sandy Dreams premiered June 12, 1948, and ran for two
years. It was the first scripted show on the West
Coast, a musical fantasy in which eight-year-old Sandy
dreams of adventures in faraway places. As she drifts
off to sleep, she and the viewers are transported to a
dreamland populated by youngsters who perform songs
and skits. Sandy Dreams was picked up by ABC and ran
nationally for only a few weeks, losing its appeal when
it lost its child stars who were under contract to KTLA.
In this episode, Sandy's friend Stuffy writes a
composition on why he wants to go to college. Sandy
dreams that she and Stuffy matriculate at Pacific
University, only to find they have to save the college's
rowing team.
Afer Sandy Dreams was purchased by ABC, the KTLA kids
were re-assigned to a new children's adventure program.
Fantastick Studios, Ink is the saga of a group of
children who start their own movie studio. It premiered
June 3, 1950, and ended its run in June, 1952. Among
the children in the cast was ten-year-old Jill
Oppenheim, later to be known as Jill St. John. In this
adventure, director Stuffy tries to finish filming his
saga of King Arthur's Round Table despite the fact that
the King is costumed in a cowboy outfit.
