Sports commentator Jim Lampley provides background on the newly-constructed and controversial Olympic Stadium, noting its many features and high cost.

Bruce Jenner (USA) achieves a distance of 23 feet, eight and three-quarters inches and earns 865 points for his jump. Fred Dixon (USA) achieves a distance of 22 feet, eight inches and earns 802 points for his jump.

After the first two events, the decathlon scores stand with Kratschmer in first place, Eberhard Stroot (West Germany) in second place and Claus Marek (West Germany) in third place.

McKay notes that rower Walter Lambertus (Romania) and diver Sergei Nemtsanov (USSR) have both requested political asylum from Canada.

Sports commentators Howard Cosell and George Foreman cover the light welterweight (64kg) boxing semifinals between Ray Charles "Sugar Ray" Leonard (USA) and Kazimierz Szczerba (Poland). After three rounds, Leonard is named the winner by unanimous decision and proceeds to the finals.

Cosell comments on the light welterweight semifinals match between Leonard's next opponent Andrés Aldama (Cuba) and Vladimir Kolev (Bulgaria), in which Aldama knocked out Kolev in the first round.

Sports commentator Robert Riger discusses runner Guy Drut (France), who won the gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles race, using slow-motion footage to describe his running style.

Jackson and fellow commentator Wyomia Tyus cover the 400-meter women's track and field finals. Irena Szewinska (Poland) wins the gold medal and sets a new world record with a time of 49.3. Christina Brehmer (East Germany) wins the silver, and Ellen Streidt (East Germany) wins the bronze.

McKay discusses middleweight boxer Michael Spinks (USA), brother to Leon Spinks (USA), explaining that he has won three matches despite only fighting in one so far, thanks to one opponent's absence because of the African boycott and another's opponent's absence due to injury.

Gifford and Kraft cover the third round of the men's heavyweight freestyle wrestling competition between Russell Hellickson (USA) and Reza Soukhteh-Saraei (Iran). Hellickson wins "by fall" and talks in an interview with Kraft about the specific moves he utilized and about his plans for his upcoming match against Khorloogiin Bayanmönkh (Mongolia).

Jackson and fellow commentator Bob Seagren preside over the men's long jump track and field finals, first recapping Bob Beamon's (USA) world record-setting jump of 29 feet, two and one-half inches at the 1968 Olympic Summer Games in Mexico City.

Arnie Robinson (USA) achieves a distance of 27 feet, four and three-quarters inches in his jump. Randy Williams (USA) achieves a distance of 26 feet, seven and one-quarter inches in his jump.

Frank Wartenberg (East Germany) achieves a distance of 26 feet three and three-quarters inches in his jump, thus securing him the bronze medal. Arnie Robinson (USA) is awarded the gold medal, and Randy Williams (USA) wins the silver.

Cosell and Foreman cover the light-heavyweight men's boxing semifinals between Leon Spinks (USA) and Janusz Gortat (Poland). The program concludes before the end of the match. Includes commercials.
