VIRGINIA SLIMS CIGARETTES: YOU'VE COME A LONG WAY,
BABY {CLIO AWARDS, 1969}

Summary

In this commercial for Virginia Slims cigarettes, a series of vignettes highlights attitudes toward women and smoking in the Victorian era. The announcer explains that when Mrs. Cynthia Robinson was caught smoking in the cellar, she was sent to her room by her husband, even though she was thirty-four years old at the time. But in 1920, through the influence of the Suffragettes, women won their rights. Suddenly the scene shifts to the 1960s, and a modern gal is lighting up a Virginia Slims cigarette. The lyrics of the accompanying jingle observe that "you've come a long way, baby, to get where you got to today."
