PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST LA 2021: THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN {EDITED MASTER}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 38th William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Recorded virtually, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This PALEYFEST 2021 seminar celebrates "The Late Late Show With James Corden," the comedy/variety talk series hosted by English comedian James Corden.

Actor Andrew Rannells moderates the following panelists: executive producers Ben Winston and Rob Crabbe; and executive producer/host Corden.

The panelists touch on such topics as: Corden's apprehension in 2015 after accepting the offer from CBS to succeed Craig Ferguson as host of the late night talk show that follows "Late Show With David Letterman"; the effect of Letterman's comment that "I'm not sure that the tubby kid is going to work"; why newspapers in the United Kingdom predicted that Corden would fail; how the first episode defined everything that followed on the show; why Corden's lack of fame in the United State proved a positive in his hosting duties; Crabbe's history with late night talk shows, and his first reaction to Corden; the goal to make a nightly variety show rather than a talk show; producers' initial difficulty with booking A-list stars for the show, and how they solved the problem; the point at which Winston realized that audiences were responding to Corden; the reaction of Corden's wife and three children after moving from London to Los Angeles; what happened when Corden incorrectly thought that a paparazzo was taking photos of him on a California beach with his wife; the origins of Carpool Karaoke; how Mariah Carey became Corden's first Carpool Karaoke guest in America thanks to George Michael; why Paul McCartney is Corden's all-time favorite Carpool Karaoke participant; if the writers purposely pen segments that they think will go viral; how staffers prepare the show's "huge production numbers"; why rapper Rick Ross walked off without a word to Corden amidst a parody of his hit song "Hustlin'"; the story behind Corden singing "One Day More" from "Les Miserables" on President Donald Trump's last day in office; whether producers have advised Corden to address world events or simply provide an hour of escapism; and why Corden takes particular pride in the episodes taped during the pandemic.
