PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST LA 2020: OZARK {EDITED MASTER}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 37th William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Recorded virtually, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This PALEYFEST 2020 seminar honors "Ozark," the Netflix drama about a family that relocates to Missouri and is subsequently enmeshed in a money laundering scheme with the area's criminal underworld.

Dave Karger (host, Turner Classic Movies) moderates the following panelists: executive producer/writer Chris Mundy, executive producer/cast member (Marty Byrde) Jason Bateman; and cast members Laura Linney (Wendy Davis Byrde), Julia Garner (Ruth Langmore); Janet McTeer (Helen Pierce) and Tom Pelphrey (Ben Davis).

Topics of discussion include: Bateman's thoughts on having "a captive audience" for the show's third season due to the pandemic; the significance and symbolism of the core family's name being Byrde; Mundy's intent to let the Byrde's troubled marriage take center stage as the show progressed; Linney's immediate decision to pair up with Batemen after being offered the role of Marty's "instinctual" spouse; Garner's trepidation for her character's recent love story, feeling that fans might feel Julia's guarded personality had changed too quickly; the line of thinking that helped McTeer project Helen's maternal side as well as her ruthlessness; why Pelphrey was chosen as the cast's latest addition, despite the fact that he doesn't look like a brother to Linney's Wendy; panelists' theories on why the show has such a devoted fan base; Garner's recollections of returning to the set after winning an Emmy for her performance as Ruth; why McTeer thrives under pressure; Mundy and Pelphrey's response to fan theories that Ben is still alive; Bateman's belief when directing episodes that "the only limit is your own creativity"; how composers establish each episode's mood; McTeer's intense aversion to the heat while filming in Atlanta during the summer; the cast's varied reactions when seeing the remnants of "an exploded head" splattered all over Bateman and Linney; and Mundy's hints on "the end game" to be revealed in the show's upcoming and final season.
