BOARDWALK EMPIRE: THE OLD SHIP OF ZION (TV)
Summary
One in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition.
In this episode, Dunn continues his covert work for Narcisse as Tolliver, growing exasperated with his agents' useless "anecdotes" about Nucky's bootlegger associates, learns that Nucky's own nephew was involved in – and then abruptly exonerated from – his classmate's bizarre death. Back in Atlantic City, Nucky sternly tells Willie that he "has to move forward" from his current predicament with school and his father. Chalky is oblivious to the congregation's stares as he adoringly watches Daughter Maitland sing at Deacon Cuffy's funeral; Nucky is taken aback when Sally suddenly arrives in New Jersey unannounced and seems disinterested in resuming their affair. Mayor Bader shares an awkward chat with Willie and frets to Nucky about Cuffy's shocking murder and other strife in Harlem, reminding him that he desperately needs the "colored vote."
Chalky and his men burst into one of Narcisse's drug dens, and a quick-thinking Dunn immediately murders the ringleader, Moses, to conceal his own duplicity. Tolliver sits down with Clayton Davies and demands information on Willie. Nucky visits the Onyx Club to remind Chalky to keep his "house in order" in order to avoid unwanted attention from the authorities. Noticing that Mickey seems to have set his sights on Sally, a jealous Nucky convinces her to stay at his hotel, and Willie uncomfortably overhears their nocturnal reunion. Narcisse stages a pro-"Libyan" play of his own invention, "Ominira," but the production is interrupted by Chalky, who defiantly sets several packages of Narcisse's heroin on fire in front of a large crowd. Later, Narcisse visits a "melancholy" Daughter Maitland and ominously informs her that she and Chalky will be joined by another visitor that evening. Willie and Sally have an insightful chat, after which Willie informs his uncle that he "wants to learn how things work" and, essentially, join his criminal enterprise.
Sally heads back to Florida with a significant cut of the latest booze shipment, and Eli finds himself trapped by Tolliver and Selby, who blackmail him with their knowledge of Willie's crime and demand that he help them to bring his brother down. Unaware of this, Nucky sends Willie off to "keep his eyes and ears open" in Mayor Bader's office, gifting him with a copy of "Ragged Dick" as he goes. Chalky and Daughter Maitland's evening together turns unexpectedly emotional as she sings for him, but they are interrupted by Dunn, who claims that Narcisse murdered Cuffy and is now using Daughter Maitland to manipulate him. Chalky, having figured out that his turncoat pal has come to murder him on Narcisse's orders, furiously attacks him. Dunn nearly kills him, but Daughter Maitland stabs him in the back and saves Chalky's life, revealing that she is finally reconsidering her dark alliance with Narcisse. Elsewhere, Eli returns home to find Willie entertaining the family, and he quietly accepts his son's apology.
