BOARDWALK EMPIRE: WILLIAM WILSON (TV)
Summary
One in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition.
In this episode, Nucky grows increasingly suspicious of Knox, who, along with Randolph and Hoover, tries to get useful information out of "cooperating witness" George Remus about the secret network of bootleggers. In Chicago, Torrio learns that Al, believing that Dean O'Banion conspired with the police to kill his brother Frank, has begun indiscriminately murdering cops, and he sternly orders Al not to "start a war." Luciano is summoned to a meeting with Masseria and Frankie Yale, and though he quickly declares that he turned down Nucky's business offer, they instruct him to head back to Tampa and see if Petrucelli can assist with their burgeoning heroin business. In Philadelphia, Willie's sense of guilt over framing his pal Clayton for Henry's death mounts, particularly when discussing an oddly relevant Edgar Allan Poe story in class.
Torrio bargains with O'Banion, who swears innocence in the matter of Frank's death, and Roy and Gillian grow closer as he nurses her through her withdrawal from heroin. Nucky digs further into Knox's background with help from Gaston Means. At work, Margaret plays her ditzy assistant role perfectly as she helps her boss Mr. Bennett to bamboozle his customers into investing in Anaconda Realty, until she finds Bennett chatting with Mr. "Abe Redstone" - a.k.a. Rothstein. Flustered, she quickly flees the scene, and he later contacts her to confirm their mutual "discretion." Chalky makes a deal with Narcisse to extend Daughter Maitland's contract at the Onyx Club in exchange for allowing him to open a chapter of his "Universal Negro Improvement Association" in Harlem. Torrio and O'Banion are arrested in a raid seconds after making their "real-estate transaction." When the Harlem residents demand answers from Purnsley, standing in for Chalky, about the growing heroin problem in their neighborhoods, Narcisse, who is dealing the drug himself, cuts in and smoothly promises to help "restore the community."
Later, Nucky tries to calm his family when Eli erupts in fury upon learning that Willie has abruptly dropped out of Temple. During an intimate evening together, Daughter Maitland tells Chalky that Narcisse became her surrogate father after her mother, a sex worker, was murdered by one of her customers. Knox is disgusted when Hoover publicly takes credit for his work in unearthing the "nationwide criminal conspiracy," and he is revealed to be working with Gaston Means, who warns him about Nucky's suspicions. A drunken Eli confronts Nucky for interfering with "his" family, cruelly bringing up Mabel and their deceased son; Torrio, released on bond, has a profound change of heart about his alliance with O'Banion. Nucky allows a distraught Willie to stay overnight to avoid Eli's wrath, and Purnsley viciously murders Deacon Cuffy for embarrassing him in front of the congregation. Back at the Onyx Club, Daughter Maitland betrays Chalky as she details pillow talk to Narcisse, and he is revealed to be the one who "set her mother free" many years ago.
