9-1-1: NEW BEGINNINGS (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series about police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and dispatchers in Los Angeles who cope with the pressures of being first-responders.
As the episode opens, a call is made to 9-1-1 by a hospital patient undergoing plastic surgery who wakes up in mid-operation to find all personnel in the operating room have passed out. When Bobby, Chimney, Hen, Buck, and Eddie arrive, they find a construction crew in the next room that passed out after sawing into a pipe, causing a massive gas leak. After arranging for transportation to another hospital for the still-bleeding plastic surgery patient, they attend to the construction worker that fell onto a circular saw blade -- which has become embedded in his stomach.
Later that night, Bobby goes to Athena's house for dinner, where he meets her parents, Beatrice and Samuel. Michael prepares to leave the house quickly, explaining to Bobby that Bea hasn't been "a fan" since he came out as gay; however, Bea remains cordial to Michael and instead insults Bobby. Athena and Bea consequently argue and Bea states in a huff that she and Samuel will leave Athena's house the next day. Hen later tells Bobby that Athena and Bea have a troubled history, which he should let them resolve on their own.
The following morning, Maddie practices boxing, coached by Buck. He teases her about her attraction to Chimney. She changes the subject by insisting that she isn't learning to defend herself because of Doug, her abusive ex-husband. Across town, a truck jackknifes on the highway, from which a tiger shark falls out. By the time that Bobby and his crew arrive on the scene, the shark is chewing on the arm of a marine biologist. Bobby uses a power saw to cut the shark's jaw, after which the fire engine transports the shark to the marina, where it safely swims into deep water. Meanwhile, Maddie gets a 9-1-1 call from a pre-teen named Stevie, whose father, Eric, quickly hangs the phone up. On Maddie's suggestion, Athena reports to the house for a followup, where she talks with both Eric and Stevie, each of whom claim that all is fine.
Athena suspects something to be amiss at the house, later playing back the call that Stevie made to Maddie. She then learns that a third person was present during the call. She stakes out Eric's house and has his garbage confiscated. Inside, Stevie watches a news report about a missing boy and realizes that Noah, a 6-year-old recently brought into the house by Eric, has been kidnapped. Next, police find that the prints of Stevie salvaged from the garbage reveal him to be a boy kidnapped six years earlier; SWAT members subsequently invade Eric's house with Athena leading them. However, the house is empty.
When Maddie takes her divorce papers to the fire station to show Chimney, she makes a date with him for Friday night. Chimney then calls his new buddy to cancel their previously made plans for Friday, not knowing that the man is really Doug. When Maddie returns to work, she gets another call from Stevie, who has escaped from Eric with Noah in tow to a subway station. Maddie gets Athena to race to the scene, even as Eric spies the boys and puts a knife to their throats when police officers close in. However, Athena surprises Eric and successfully rescues the boys. Back at the police station, both Stevie and Noah are reunited with their ecstatic parents.
That night, Bea apologizes to Athena for her recent actions and the two try to reach an understanding. At the same time, Chimney enters Maddie's apartment complex courtyard for their date, just as Doug jumps him and repeatedly stabs him. As Maddie opens her front door, thinking that Chimney is on the other side, Doug sucker-punches her head, violently knocking her to the ground. Commercials deleted.
