FRESH OFF THE BOAT: COUSIN EDDIE (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series, inspired by the memoir by chef Eddie Huang, about a Taiwanese immigrant family and their attempts to build a "perfect" American life in 1990s Florida.
In this episode, Eddie is annoyed when Jessica, who has very strict rules for crafting an idyllic family Christmas, forbids him from visiting his friend Nicole in New York over the holiday. Indecisive Emery is tasked with selecting a "go-to friend" to fill a spot at the dinner table, and Grandma advises Eddie to prove his maturity in order to sway Jessica into loosening up about Christmas. Eddie decides to volunteer at a soup kitchen on the night of the annual Huang family "Nutcracker" trip, though Jessica is not fooled and rearranges the date of their trip to the ballet.
Evan and Louis attempt a "good cop/bad cop" approach to force Emery to make a decision about his dinner guest. Eddie and Jessica engage in a battle of wills over their Christmas traditions, with Eddie eventually selecting Cindy, a homeless soup-kitchen patron, as his dinner guest. Jessica's resolve finally breaks when she sees that Eddie has added his favorite "porn-ament" to the Christmas tree; Louis gently points out that she herself "improved" her mother's holiday traditions and must now be open to change, as her sons are in fact growing up. Emery, touched to see that his brother invited a large group of his friends to dinner, decides that Evan is actually his "go-to friend," and Jessica admits to Eddie that she is reluctant to let go of her Christmas traditions because they originated from her first Christmas with her newborn eldest son. Later, the family adds some new traditions after all: Monopoly and karaoke. Commercials deleted.
