PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST NY 2018: CBS SUNDAY MORNING {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's PaleyFest New York 2018. This evening celebrates "CBS Sunday Morning," the long-running series of Sunday morning programs mixing news and human interest stories, hosted by Jane Pauley.
A brief series of clips explores the show's history of profiling "gentler subjects," honoring first host Charles Kuralt, second host "Charles II," Charles Osgood, and third and current host Jane Pauley. After the clips, host Ron Simon (curator, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and introduces Faith Salie (commentator and correspondent, "CBS Sunday Morning"). Salie moderates the following panelists: executive producer Rand Morrison; producer Jay Kernis; and correspondents Conor Knighton, David Pogue, Martha Teichner and Nancy Giles. Correspondent Mo Rocca, on assignment in Washington D.C., also briefly joins the panel via Skype.
The panelists touch on such topics as: Rocca's most memorable stories, including his current work in profiling pacifist Colman McCarthy; Giles' history in stand-up comedy and memories of her first story pitched to Morrison, a humorous piece about the story of high heels; how Morrison, who took over as executive producer in September 1999, improved certain aspects of the show while maintaining its original "great bones"; incorporating more popular culture and different genres of music and comedy; the show's increased success since Morrison's takeover, including his ten Emmy Awards; frequent positive reactions from fans on the street; Teichner's association with the show since its debut in 1979 and her work with series creator Robert "Shad" Northshield; her views on how the show covers foreign stories with "substance"; how Knighton's cross-country explorations of America's many national parks have rendered him "homeless"; Pogue's memorable 2011 story about the end of the space program, including his emotional interview with NASA head Charles Bolden and his decision to offer closing comments right in front of the shuttle launch – which many fans mistook for a green-screen special effect; Giles' 2017 interview with veteran pop star Johnny Mathis, in which he opened up about his long-rumored sexual orientation; the correspondents' methods for "wowing" Morrison with their story ideas; their interest in pursuing stories that "no else does" and obtaining exclusive access to people and places, including an upcoming story about the SpaceX aeronautics company; why the reporters try to "laugh with" their subjects, rather than creating an adversarial encounter; their goal of allowing viewers to "feel full" after a satisfyingly thorough segment; the show as an "oasis" that largely avoids "less-than-gentle subjects"; their occasional political coverage, including Giles' freedom to "opine" about certain topics and figures; Teichner's interest in tackling controversial topics with an "analytical" tone; Kernis' description of the show as "a very adult place" in which the correspondents are responsible for handling their own stories and assignments; the "punctilious" Morrison's strict attention to detail, including an incident in which Pogue was scolded for "staging" a funny verbal exchange; why they cannot bring themselves to choose favorite individual stories; and praise for the show's many talented editors.
Also included in the program are clips of interviews with celebrities such as Sophia Loren, Willem Dafoe, LL Cool J, Dame Judi Dench, Sofia Vergara, Meryl Streep, Will Smith, Liza Minnelli, Cybill Shepherd, Billy Bob Thornton, Rob Reiner, Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher, Cher, Jane Fonda, William Shatner, Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart and Jerry Seinfeld.
