MAGNUM P.I.: I SAW THE SUN RISE {SERIES PREMIERE} {2018 VERSION} (TV)

Summary

The first in the dramatic action series, a reboot of the 1980s series of the same name, about the adventures of a U.S. Marine-turned-private investigator living in Hawaii.

In this episode, Thomas Sullivan Magnum performs a HALO jump – from outer space – and rescues a family of North Korean defectors before being rescued by his Marine buddies in a helicopter. It is then revealed, however, that the story has been somewhat exaggerated by journalist-turned-novelist Robin Masters, for whom Magnum now works as a live-in security adviser in addition to his P.I. work. Magnum banters with Juliet Higgins, Masters' no-nonsense "majordomo," and then receives a call from his pal Sebastian Nuzo requesting his help on a job. He arrives at Nuzo's home just in time to see his friend being kidnapped and hauled off in an ambulance. Detective Yoshi Tanaka interrupts Magnum's interview with Nuzo's wife Lara, sternly informing him that the Hawaiian police will handle the case without him. Magnum finds that Nuzo has left him a subtle clue, however, and Magnum annoys Higgins by borrowing another one of Masters' expensive cars – having crashed the Ferrari at the kidnapping scene – and heads off to investigate.

Fellow Marine Orville "Rick" Wright tracks down the stolen ambulance, and he, Magnum and Theodore "TC" Calvin are soon heartbroken to find Nuzo's dead body in the abandoned vehicle. Determined to find his friend's killers, Magnum visits Captain Greene, who confirms that Nuzo had recently been hired by two shady ex-Marines, Dale Gerard and Charlie Resnick, but declines to reveal further details. Magnum sadly thinks back on his time in a POW camp alongside Nuzo, TC and Rick, recalling that Nuzo saved his life with an unpleasant gunpowder cauterization; when Higgins uncharacteristically offers to assist him, he asks her to break into Nuzo's office and search his emails for clues. Magnum next visits Medical Examiner Dr. Noelani Cunha, who confirms that Nuzo was waterboarded before his demise/ Higgins ends up fighting with Gerard and Resnick when they surprise her in Nuzo's office, narrowly escaping with a minor gunshot wound. Magnum comforts Nuzo's young son Jake, explaining that he, too, lost his father at a young age; he next consults Kim Kil-Yon, the North Korean defector, who suggests that Nuzo's clue is actually coordinates.

Gerard and Resnick corner Magnum and violently order him to abandon his investigation or risk Lara and Jake's lives, but Magnum and Rick follow the coordinates out to sea, where they find a shipwreck containing a quantity of gold bars stolen from the Middle East. Greene confirms that Gerard and Resnick hired Nuzo to find the treasure after their boat sank. Tanaka told them that the gold was gone, meaning that Gerard and Resnick likely followed them out to the site. Magnum then calls Higgins and, revealing that he knows about her secret MI-6 past, asks her to find Gerard and Resnick using satellite imagery. Magnum, TC and Rick chase the thieves, leading to a death-defying stunt. Magnum destroys a second car, but he recovers the gold and captures the killers; he later joins his friends for Nuzo's funeral, explaining that they all wear rings bearing the Cross of Lorraine to signify their time together in the service and their close friendship.
