NEW AMSTERDAM: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this dramatic medical series, inspired by the book by Dr. Eric Manheimer, about a radical medical director who attempts to revolutionize the United States' first public hospital.

In this episode, a carbon monoxide leak sickens dozens of people at the United Nations. Elsewhere, Dr. Max Goodwin arrives for work at New Amsterdam public hospital as the institution's fifth medical director in as many years. He encounters Dr. Helen Sharpe as she heads out on yet another fundraising public relations trip. Goodwin briefly talks to Georgia, his pregnant wife, promising to "win her back" from their trial separation. Goodwin then gathers the doctors and, noting that his own sister died at New Amsterdam many years ago from a preventable hospital-acquired infection, abruptly fires the entire cardiac department, accusing them of "placing billing above care." When he asks "how he can help," both Dr. Lauren Bloom and psychiatrist Dr. Iggy Frome speak up with suggestions. Goodwin asks Bloom to give him a throat biopsy, and she informs him that while the cardiac department was largely "corrupt and lazy," he may have misjudged Dr. Floyd Reynolds, with whom she has an on-off physical relationship.

Goodwin peruses Reynolds' file and, seeing that he is willing to eschew expensive and unnecessary surgeries in favor of less invasive procedures, "unfires" him and instructs him to build an entirely new cardiac department. Elsewhere, Frome considers committing a 16-year-old girl, Jemma, in order to keep her from returning to the foster-care system in which she has been repeatedly abused. Dr. Vijay Kapoor treats a woman, Patricia Martin, who was inaccurately pronounced dead earlier in the day; when Alain, a young Liberian immigrant, suddenly collapses at the hospital, Goodwin realizes that he is displaying possible Ebola symptoms and orders him quarantined. He checks on several ambassadors recovering from the carbon monoxide scare, while elsewhere Bloom is offended when Reynolds breaks off their casual relationship, explaining he intends to eventually marry another African-American. Government agents arrive and inform Goodwin that Alain was intentionally dosed with Ebola by ISIS terrorists and sent to New York as a human biological weapon, but Alain explains that, instead of heading to a Times Square hostel as instructed, he came straight to the hospital for treatment.

Goodwin considers taking Kapoor off Patricia's case, feeling that he is treating her improperly, but Kapoor explains how his "slowed-down" method of investigation determined that her initial misdiagnosis of Parkinson's disease led to a series of other mistakes that concealed her true condition, a hidden tumor. Goodwin summons Sharpe back to the hospital and informs her that she has 48 hours to resume treating patients. Frome meets with Blanca, the biological daughter of one of Jemma's few kindly foster parents, who has since died. Uncomfortable, Blanca declines to assist with Jemma's care, while back at the hospital Kapoor and Goodwin gently tell Patricia of her terminal diagnosis. Patricia and her husband explain that they are undocumented immigrants and therefore cannot travel back to Mexico to visit her family one final time. However, Goodwin calls in a favor with the Mexican ambassador, and Patricia and her husband are soon repatriated. Bloom breaks Goodwin's strict rules and potentially exposes herself to Ebola when Alain starts suffering dire symptoms, and Goodwin is faced with his own near-tragedy when Georgia is rushed into the ER with dangerous pregnancy complications, though the baby is soon determined to be healthy. Blanca changes her mind and agrees to take Jemma in, and Bloom learns that Alain has a different, far more treatable infection, meaning that she and Alain are safe. Reynolds reconsiders his views on their relationship, and Sharpe returns to the hospital, explaining that she was becoming too "immune" to patients' pain and suffering, but now feels rejuvenated in her desire to help others because of Goodwin. She then notes that his bold behavior is in part inspired by his knowledge of his own diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Commercials deleted.
