HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER: LAHEY V. COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA {SCANDAL CROSSOVER EPISODE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of legal dramas about a hard-nosed Philadelphia law professor who recruits her students to work in her firm – leading to their entanglement in a variety of ethically questionable schemes.
In this episode, the second half of a special two-part crossover with "Scandal," Olivia and Annalise practice for the Supreme Court case regarding underfunded public defenders and Sixth Amendment violations. However, on TV, defense attorney Ingrid Egan tries to highlight both of their respective criminal histories. Connor, resentful that Michaela stole the case from him, reluctantly agrees to accompany the others to D.C. Olivia reminds Annalise of the extreme historical importance of winning their case when Annalise decides to reject offers of assistance from the ACLU and other groups to handle the arguments herself.
Bonnie and Frank investigate Wes' financials and debate when to tell Laurel the truth. As Annalise schemes to figure out with whom Justice Egan is trading information, she decides to invite her parents along to watch the hearing. They soon arrive and meet Olivia. Michaela finally gives in to her attraction to Marcus while staking out Justice Egan's home together. When Nate arrives with his father, Olivia is upset to realize that Annalise's all-important "face case" is actually that of her ex's father, though Annalise convinces her that she is "doing something that matters" for once. On the day of the hearing, Annalise nervously prepares herself as her students arrive in D.C.; Michaela's friends immediately deduce that she cheated on an oblivious Asher. Michaela then notices Justice Strickland conversing with a familiar "pizza guy" and figures out how Justice Egan slipped him important documents. Annalise is overcome with anxiety when Jacqueline informs her that Isaac has been hospitalized from an overdose. Jacqueline then offers the reason for the overdose: Annalise "ruined him," as she does to many people.
Olivia finds Annalise in a state of near-nervous collapse and sternly talks her into regaining her strength. She reminds Annalise that "this case chose her," even giving her the chance to break her sobriety if she must. Annalise resists temptation and heads into the courtroom, though Ophelia, believing that "Anna Mae" is on her way into a "debate contest," almost waylays her. She is gently redirected by Olivia, who ends up bonding with her. Once in front of the justices, Annalise describes Nate Sr.'s insufficient legal counsel and inability to appeal his case, arguing that "the system made him a killer," though some of the justices object to her defense of a confessed murderer. Chief Justice Montgomery declares that she can't simultaneously argue racism and underfunded lawyers. Annalise sends Michaela and Marcus running to the library, however, and she soon quotes Justice Montgomery's own words from a 1985 case, arguing in a stirring speech that "racism is built into the DNA of America" and prisoners like Nate Sr. are systematically denied equal protection.
Annalise and Justice Egan await the justices' decision; Annalise praises her team, "especially Connor," as well as Olivia, as she address the press on the courtroom steps. Frank finds no mysterious money in Wes' account — but he does find a secret recording of Wes talking with Laurel's mother, which he then plays for a shocked Laurel. Olivia and Annalise say their farewells, and Annalise then receives a call from Bonnie reporting that Simon has awakened after his accidental shooting. Includes commercials and promos.
