ROSEANNE: DRESS TO IMPRESS (TV)

Summary

One in this revived comedy series about Roseanne and Dan Conner, a working-class couple who live in Lanford, Illinois, and their three kids, D.J., Darlene, and Becky, now adults with families of their own.

In this episode, Becky feverishly prepares for a visit from Andrea, for whom she hopes to be a surrogate. Roseanne and Dan express their worries about cross-dressing grandson Mark's first day at his new school, sure that he will be teased, though Darlene maintains that he is entitled to his own self-expression. Self-appointed "life coach" Jackie weighs in on the meaninglessness of the gender binary. Roseanne sits down with Mark and tells him that he must "pick his fights." He informs her that he is simply a boy who enjoys colorful, interesting clothes. Satisfied, Roseanne accompanies him to class and makes it clear that she will not tolerate unkind behavior toward her grandson; back at home, Becky scrambles to present a somewhat sanitized version of the Conner family history -- physical, mental and otherwise -- to the meticulous Andrea.

Darlene angrily tells Dan that Mark was hauled into the principal's office for bringing a knife to school. She assumes that Dan gave it to him to increase his "masculinity," though Dan protests that it was merely for protection against dangerous bullies. Mark admits that he was indeed mocked for his clothes and tried to pacify one of the mean kids with the knife as a gift. Darlene reminds him that "weird is cool" and encourages him to seek out other unique kids as friends. Mark returns to school with an increased sense of confidence, and Becky is relieved when Andrea sends the family a gift, suggesting that she was not entirely put off by their rambunctious ways.
