GOOD DOCTOR, THE: MORE {FIRST SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The first season finale in this dramatic medical series, based on the South Korean series of the same name, about Shaun Murphy, a young and brilliant surgeon with autism and savant syndrome.

In this episode, Murphy pleads with Glassman to get a second opinion regarding his glioma diagnosis, and an inebriated young man, Caden, undergoes surgery for a badly broken leg and begins displaying other troubling symptoms. Kalu and Park use a "good cop, bad cop" method to get the truth out of Caden's friend Blake, who admits that Caden ingested laundry detergent during a fraternity initiation ritual. Murphy, fixated on Glassman's problem, is distracted during Caden's next procedure, and he then asks Preston to "trick" Glassman into undergoing further imaging tests. Caden experiences a disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and though Melendez rejects the idea that the hyper-focused Murphy could be at fault, he questions Glassman about Murphy's distracted air and is shocked when Glassman reveals his terminal diagnosis.

Browne guesses that Caden has taken drugs, and a guilt-ridden Blake admits that they were both on ecstasy at the time of his injury. Glassman is angered when Preston invokes Maddie's memory, suggesting that his daughter would want him to fight for his life, but he seems moved when Preston urges him to undergo the additional tests for Murphy's sake. Andrews questions Melendez about Caden's DIC, and Patia tells Glassman that his diagnosis was indeed incorrect, as Murphy suspected: he likely has a glioblastoma multiforme, meaning an even worse prognosis of three to four months. Caden's symptoms are determined to be unrelated to the MDMA, deepening Andrews' suspicions, and Glassman finally loses his temper with Murphy as he continues to obsess over a potential solution; he heatedly tells Murphy that it is "futile and stupid" to pretend that he can be cured, and that he would prefer to "have fun" in his last months.

Murphy accompanies Glassman to a carousel, where he relates his fondest memories of Maddie, and Murphy admits that he lost the toy scalpel given to him by Steve. Back at the hospital, Murphy concludes that he made an error during Caden's surgery, but then comes up with an idea for Glassman and tells him that a biopsy performed through his nose would avoid dangerous blood vessels and provide a definitive answer. The other doctors argue about whether to report Murphy's error, knowing that he will likely be fired for it, and Melendez suggests that there is no need to publicize the matter if Caden makes a full recovery. Murphy takes the lead in inserting an endovascular graft, stating that Caden's life is now his responsibility, and the surgery is a success. Glassman, having undergone the nasal biopsy, tells Murphy that he in fact has a low-grade glioma, which can potentially be treated with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. An overjoyed Murphy gives him an uncharacteristic hug. He then resolves to admit his error to the hospital board despite the fact that Caden survived; Glassman, knowing that he may also be fired because of Murphy's actions, tells Preston that he will not ask Murphy to lie to save his own job, and the two head off to speak to Andrews.
