PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2018: OPENING NIGHT PRESENTATION: BARBRA STREISAND {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 35th William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This opening night of PALEYFEST 2018 honors actress/singer/director/producer Barbra Streisand and celebrates her six decades of television appearances. Host Maureen Reidy (president and CEO, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and brings the evening's moderator, director/producer Ryan Murphy, to the stage.

Murphy introduces an extensive clip package which includes; childhood photos of Streisand; her early appearances on "The Garry Moore Show," "The Jack Paar Show," "The Ed Sullivan Show," and "What's My Line?"; her specials " My Name Is Barbra," "Color Me Barbra," "The Belle of 14th Street," "Barbra Streisand and Other Musical Instruments," "A Happening in Central Park," "Barbra Streisand in Concert," and "Barbra: The Music, the Mem'ries, the Magic"; receiving Oscar, Emmy, Tony, and Golden Globe awards; her televised duets with Neil Diamond, Barry Gibb, Burt Bacharach, Michael Buble, Ray Charles, Jamie Foxx, Jimmy Fallon, Judy Garland, and son Jason Gould; being interviewed by Barbara Walters on "20/20"; cameo appearances on "Late Show with David Letterman" and "Saturday Night Live"; singing at President Bill Clinton's 1993 inauguration; and receiving the Presidential Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama in 2015. Later in the evening, a clip package is shown of television films and programs on which Streisand served as producer.

Streisand and Murphy touch on such topics as: the current writing of her autobiography; her reaction to appearing on Judy Garland's variety show; why a performer's anxiety increases with age; her love for William Wyler, who directed the film version of "Funny Girl"; why she tried to get out of doing the film version of "Hello, Dolly!"; where she keeps her Oscars; gaining creative control on her one-woman TV shows in the '60s; experiencing stage fright while giving a concert in Central Park; her decades-long absence from performing in public; finishing the editing of her HBO special three hours before it aired; recollections of Mike Wallace making her cry during a "60 Minutes" interview; being misquoted by the press; why she's not afraid of "being controlling"; her history with Barbara Walters, and being labeled by Walters as "difficult"; why she has never thought of herself as "powerful"; and her theories on how she never had a #MeToo moment during her decades in show business.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics, among others: which of her projects gave her the most joy; why directing films such as "Yentl" proved such "a complete experience"; the TV shows she currently watches; her feelings on Lady Gaga starring in the 2018 remake of "A Star Is Born"; the gender changes in her orchestras over the years; and why she never embraced music videos. At the program's conclusion, Reidy returns to the stage to present Streisand with the first PaleyFest Icon award.
