EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS: EVERYBODY HATES KWANZAA (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series that takes place in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn in 1982, the year Chris Rock turned 13. In this episode, when Chris' teacher instructs the students to "help someone in need" over winter break, Chris opts to help local eccentric homeless man "Kill Moves" track down a Christmas gift for his mother. Julius, dismayed not to have received a Christmas bonus at work, decides to embrace the less materialistic holiday of Kwanzaa instead, pretending that he is doing so out of cultural pride rather than a lack of funds. Drew embraces the new traditions, though Tonya opts not to tell her friends about her family's holiday. Chris, shocked by Kill Moves' secret stash of money, helps him to select a wristwatch and a box of chocolates for his mother, then recruiting Greg's help to find out where she actually lives.
In desperation, Tonya shoplifts a Walkman for her friend Monica's Christmas present, and Chris and Greg find Kill Moves' address book and realize that his mother Kathleen lives on the fancy Upper East Side. After giving Kill Moves a hasty makeover, the trio visits Kathleen's elegant penthouse, and she seems unfazed by her son's odd behavior, explaining that he has always been "savant-like." Elsewhere, Rochelle, frustrated by the Kwanzaa celebrations, learns of Tonya's theft and orders her to return the item, and Chris is amazed when Kathleen sends Kill Moves, a.k.a. "Edgar," on his way with a suitcase full of cash. Julius finally tells an unhappy Rochelle about his money problems, and Chris, not wanting to accept a reward from Kill Moves, gives his Christmas card to a guy on the street. The Rocks compromise on the holiday festivities with a discounted "day after Christmas" celebration – though Chris is dismayed to find that the card from Kathleen in fact contained $2,000. Commercials deleted.
