AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE: FAMILY SECRETS (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a married mother of three and her efforts to fit in to her affluent Connecticut neighborhood.

In this episode, Greg anxiously prepares for a Thanksgiving visit from his snobbish, anti-technology parents Thomas and Amanda, admitting that, as an only child, he is overly desperate for his father's approval. Taylor, having just received her first-ever "I love you" text message from Eyo, is outraged when her father locks up their cell phones for the day; Anna-Kat prepares to make a documentary about her family's holiday celebrations for a school assignment. Spencer Blitz then arrives, having been invited by Oliver, though his ankle monitor limits his movements around the house. Thomas and Amanda are less than pleased that their grandson has befriended an ex-con, and Taylor desperately tries to speed up the dinner in order to reclaim her phone and answer the message. Katie's outrageous mother Kathryn then crashes the dinner; when Greg hints that she is "not good enough" for his parents, Katie declares that she is done trying to impress her in-laws with faux elegance.

Spencer observes tension between Thomas and Amanda as Katie, finally able to bond with her mother over their mutual dislike of Greg's parents, bluntly tries and fails to wrest a compliment out of Thomas for Greg's new book. She seeks advice from Doris and Angela, and when Taylor explains her conundrum, the highly experienced Kathryn urges her to truly consider if she loves Eyo in return. Anna-Kat then screens her "film," and Oliver, who previously admitted to bonding with Spencer mainly out of a desire to end up in his will, feels guilty when Spencer sincerely declares his happiness at finding a new family. Everyone is stunned when additional footage reveals a secret fight between Thomas and Amanda in which she condemns his treatment of Greg and reveals that he has a second family – and a second son named Greg – in England. Outraged, Greg declares that he is happy with his imperfect family and no longer desires his father's approval. Thomas and Amanda then leave in a huff. Taylor sadly explains that she and Eyo have split up, and Oliver firmly states that he does not want anything material from his friend Spencer – who then departs the dinner with Kathryn in tow.
