EL CHAPO: CHAPTER 1 {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} {STEREO VERSION} (TV)
Summary
The second season premiere in this dramatic historical series about the chaotic life of famed Mexican drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. In this episode, in 2001, worldwide news outlets report the shocking discovery that El Chapo has escaped from the Puente Grande prison in Mexico. Guzmán is picked up by his friends and arrives at the home of his "representative" Arturo Bernal-Leyda, where he addresses a congregation of cartel leaders and hitmen, declaring that they must work together against their common enemy, the Avendaños. Six years previously, Guzmán uses blackmail to get himself moved to Puente Grande, boldly informing his fellow prisoners that he "won't be there long." He sends an envoy to Don Sol and offers him a hefty sum to arrange for a greatly reduced sentence, but Don Sol, mindful of his own political ambitions, refuses to take the bribe. In prison, Guzmán and Güero agree that Amado is to blame for their situations, and Guzmán decides to wait for the opportune moment to make his escape, legal or otherwise.
In Mexico City, Amado narrowly escapes and attempt on his life, and in Juarez, Don Sol warns him that he has allowed his fellow cartel bosses to become too powerful. Amado, however, appears unconcerned, confident that he has enough allies to protect him. Guzmán meets Fontanero, a "useful" fellow prisoner, and he decides to "have a good time" in prisoner and begins acquire power as he bribes various guards and other prisoners for favors. Guzmán is then pleased by a visit from his wife and son, assuring them that he is "making friends" in prison, and his luck continues to improve when Amado decides to alter his appearance via surgery and dies of an apparent stroke during the operation. Don Sol worries that the cartel violence will now worsen and advises the President that they can at least "control," if not entirely prevent, the cartel's trafficking if they pursue the "biggest fish," namely the Avendaños. Don Sol meets with the Avendaños, who demand that he stop assisting El Chapo, and Guzmán is infuriated to hear that the government has "chosen" his enemies and places a secret call to Ismael, stating that he now needs someone "higher" than Don Sol to assist him.
Guzmán manages to befriend the head of Puente Grande, Leonardo Saaverdra, while out on the streets the Avendaños continue their reign of terror by executing more of their enemies. Don Sol comes to regret his tentative alliance with the Avendaños and realizes that he must help to free El Chapo after all in order to bring them down, and El Chapo learns that Latorre, the favored Presidential candidate, will arrange to have him released if he agrees to unify the cartels and do away with the Avendaños, using Don Sol as a "middleman." The American government, however, expresses a desire to extradite El Chapo to the U.S. after one of his Los Angeles warehouses is raided, and a worried El Chapo demands to speak directly with the DEA in order to make a deal. A DEA agent, Pepe, poses as a psychologist and sits down with Guzmán at Puente Grande, but he refuses to accept Guzmán's offer to track down the Avendaños in exchange for remaining in Mexico. Guzmán begins to seriously consider escape as his best option, though Latorre then accepts his "offer" and agrees to arrange for Guzmán's release after the election. A reinvigorated Guzmán furiously beats a guard who attempts to intervene during a jailhouse party, and when a female prisoner tries to refuse his advances, even Guzmán's friends are alarmed by his cruelty when he informs them that "nobody tells him no." Guzmán, Don Sol and the rest of Mexico are left reeling when the Institutional Labor Party suffers a "shocking" loss on Election Day, and El Chapo realizes that without Latorre in power, he may very well be extradited after all. With only one choice left to him, he calls Ismael and then meets with Deputy Director of Security Gálvez, calmly informing him that he now intends to escape.
