GOOD DOCTOR, THE: BURNT FOOD {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this dramatic medical series, based on the South Korean series of the same name, about Shaun Murphy, a young and brilliant surgeon with autism and savant syndrome. In this episode, Shaun travels from Cheyenne, Wyoming to San Jose to begin his new job at St. Bonaventure Hospital. At the airport, a young boy, Adam, is critically injured by broken glass when a sign falls, and Shaun bluntly tells another doctor that he is "killing" the boy with inaccurate treatment. In San Jose, hospital president Dr. Aaron Pressman debates with the rest of the board about his decision to hire a resident with autism, arguing that his savant abilities make him uniquely qualified. At the same time, residents Claire Browne and Jared Kalu enjoy a quick tryst in the on-call room before Claire meets with a patient, Callum Reilly, and tries to convince him to sign a consent form for a bypass operation. Shaun gets into trouble with security when he grabs a knife to perform a field surgery on Adam, and Claire tells her attendant Neil Melendez that she has delayed Callum's surgery for a day to allow him to discuss his fears with a psychiatrist first, Neil ignores her concerns and instructs Jared to get the form signed right away.
Everyone is awed when Shaun relieves Adam's tension pneumothorax, though Aaron frets over his lateness and colleague Jessica Preston, granddaughter of the hospital's founder, warns him not to take the young man's employment "personally." In the ambulance, Shaun recalls the night on which his father killed his pet rabbit in his anger over his son's "odd" behavior, and he notices a discrepancy with Adam's cardiac readouts. Jared gets the signature and Neil begins Callum's surgery, finding a complication that might have killed him if they delayed, as Claire wished. Adam is rushed into the ER and Shaun tries to insist on a seemingly superfluous echocardiogram, but he is ignored and tossed from the hospital, leaving him to anxiously pace in the rain. In the past, young Shaun and his little brother bring the deceased rabbit to a befuddled Dr. Glassman, who is struck by the boys' distress, and in the present, he declares that it will be beneficial to patients to see a doctor who is "different" and also capable. Neil and Claire track down "the weird guy" and ask about his plea for an echocardiogram, though when the doctors perform it, it seems to be normal and therefore a waste of time.
Shaun, however, points out a very subtle pericardial effusion, and Claire agrees that a tiny shard of glass could have entered Adam's bloodstream. The board votes to hire Shaun just as footage of the airport surgery goes viral online, and in the past, Shaun and his little brother seek refuge in an abandoned bus, determined not to return home to their cruel father. Shaun is proven right and Adam's life is saved, though Neil still balks at hiring the uncommunicative young resident. Claire tries to befriend Shaun, though he is confused by her apparent change of heart, and Aaron declares that he himself will resign if Shaun does not prove himself capable after a six-month trial period. When asked to articulate his reasons for studying medicine, Shaun speaks uncomfortably but honesty about his heartbreak over the deaths of both his rabbit and his brother, who was killed in a fall shortly after their absconsion to the train yard, explaining that he wishes to help people in need where he can, and he is officially accepted onto the St. Bonaventure staff. During his first official surgery, however, Neil informs him that he still does not belong and declares that he will be allowed only to assist. In response, Shaun notes that Neil is a very talented surgeon and inquires if his unpleasant arrogance is "worth it." Commercials deleted.
