YOUNG SHELDON: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this comedy series about the tumultuous East Texas childhood of eccentric scientific genius Sheldon Cooper, a spinoff of "The Big Bang Theory."
In this episode, nine-year-old Sheldon spends some blissful time alone with his beloved toy trains before being summoned to dinner with his parents George and Mary, his twin sister Missy and older brother George Jr., who is annoyed to hear that his brilliant little brother will soon be joining him in high school. Atheist Sheldon agrees to accompany Mary to church, though he annoys everyone with his pragmatic questions during the service, and his careful study of the student handbook is interrupted by a visit from local bully Billy Sparks and his terrifying chicken. Missy and Sheldon overhear their parents arguing about money, and on the first day of school, Sheldon flies into a panic when he cannot locate his bow tie. George Sr. confesses to stealing it, feeling that his younger son was "weird enough" without it, and Mary finally bargains with Sheldon to abandon his mock-worthy fashion choice.
Mary's fears for her know-it-all son are realized when Sheldon immediately alienates his classmates – and all of the teachers – by bluntly pointing out their many academic errors and handbook violations. The staff agrees that he "does not belong," but Mary, hauled into the principal's office with George, declares that she cannot afford private school and that her son deserves an education like any other child. Elsewhere, the music teacher is amazed to find that Sheldon has perfect pitch, though is disinterested in pursuing the arts, and when an embarrassed George Jr. tries to quit the football team, he receives a talking-to from his coach/father. Back at home, George Sr. interrupts "Professor Proton" to tell Sheldon that he himself was fired from his previous job for speaking up about others' rule-breaking and advises his son to "mind his own business," though Sheldon displays uncharacteristic empathy when he wonders if his father is "sad" about the incident. Later, he attempts to reduce some of his obsessive-compulsive tendencies, and is overjoyed when Mary takes him to his beloved Radio Shack. Commercials deleted.
