PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST NY 2017: BLUE BLOODS {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's PaleyFest New York 2017. This evening celebrates "Blue Bloods," the drama series about a multi-generational family of police officers in New York City.
Host Rebecca Paller (curator, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and welcomes executive producer/writer Kevin Wade, who introduces the episode "Out of the Blue," which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 130857.)
After the screening, Vladimir Duthiers (correspondent, CBS) moderates the following panelists: Wade; and cast members Marisa Ramirez (Detective Maria Baez), Vanessa Ray (Officer Edit "Eddie" Janko), Sami Gayle (Nicky Reagan-Boyle), Will Estes (Officer Jamie Reagan), Bridget Moynahan (A.D.A. Erin Reagan), Donnie Wahlberg (Detective Danny Reagan) and Tom Selleck (Commissioner Frank Reagan).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the show's long-term success; the recent filming of the 163rd episode, which breaks Selleck's previous record of 162 episodes on "Magnum, P.I."; praise for several of the series' supporting actors, present in the audience; Danny's struggle with the death of his wife Linda (Amy Carlson) and how the character's loss parallels his own loss of his frequent scene partner; exploring the five stages of grief throughout the season, with Selleck's reference to the loss of his mother; his interest in placing the show's central relationships in "jeopardy"; how the death of Linda is "mirrored" by Erin's complex relationship with ex-husband Jack (Peter Hermann); whether partners Jamie and Eddie will finally enter into a romantic relationship, with reference to the infamous "Moonlighting curse" and the NYPD's rules about fraternization; "civic-minded" Nicky's interest in a law-related career; Ray's thoughts on Eddie's potential invitation to a Reagan Sunday-night dinner; Selleck's interest in being continually surprised by the stories; Ramirez and Wahlberg's quick bond; Danny's many partners, including Jackie Curatola (Jennifer Esposito), and Wahlberg's hopes that Baez will be a permanent fixture; the arrival of new interim Mayor Margaret Dutton (Lorraine Bracco) and her tense relationship with Frank; the "very New York choice" of Bracco for the part; presenting balanced, true-to-life stories based on the writers' research; and the importance of the dinner-table scenes in presenting respectful debates about complex issues.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics, among others: whether Wahlberg will showcase his musical talents in an upcoming episode; potential future romances for divorcée Erin and for widower Frank; Erin's unique bond with plainspoken investigator Anthony Abetemarco (Steve Schirripa); positive responses from real policemen, including Wahlberg's recent award at the Detectives’ Endowment Association's 100th Anniversary Gala, which he considers "his Emmy"; portraying cops who are flawed as well as those who are heroic; whether Wahlberg's fast-food chain Wahlburgers will make an appearance on the show; and the actors' most memorable episodes and moments, including scenes filmed at the 9/11 memorial and Wahlberg and Estes' scenes of brotherly love.
