GHOSTED: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this supernatural comedy series about two hapless strangers who are recruited to help battle paranormal forces of evil. In this episode, a man is seemingly attacked by a bolt of light, while elsewhere astrophysicist-turned-bookstore employee Max Jennifer scares customers with his tales of his wife's alien abduction and former LAPD detective Leroy Wright takes a break from his unpleasant mall-security job to chat with his friend's kid. Both Max and Leroy are suddenly abducted and thrown into a van by the oddly polite Barry, and when they reawaken in a mysterious bunker, they are greeted by Captain Ava Lafrey of The Bureau Underground, who abruptly informs them that one of their agents, Checker, has been kidnapped, leaving behind only a video requesting Max and Leroy's help. Lafrey promises the bewildered pair that she will restore them to their lost careers if they assist the Bureau for a mere two days, and they agree, with some apprehension. Lafrey explains that the secret agency monitors and intervenes with paranormal activity, and Max is delighted to learn that his long-held theories about the "multiverse" are in fact accurate.
Leroy uses his missing-persons experience to track Checker's phone to a mysterious storage space, though he grows impatient when Max needles him about his lost detective career. Max pleads with him to stay on the case, as he himself has "lost everything," and the storage unit reveals a secret map to the nearby Waterbridge Nuclear Power Plant. Max and Leroy semi-convincingly impersonate two printer repairmen to gain access to Waterbridge, but they are soon pursued by a large and terrifying man. Bureau weapons and tech expert Annie helps them to escape, and Max explains that the plant is illegally siphoning energy to a magnetic coil, which surely has a twin somewhere. Locating a "large-scale disturbance" in the magnetic field, Max and Leroy head to a warehouse, and when Max tells Leroy about his wife's "abduction," Leroy suggests that she merely left him. Leroy leaves Max in the car, which soon begins floating with the same strange light that attacked Checker, and Leroy finally admits that he left the force after the death of his last partner, for which he blames himself.
Max and Leroy find that Checker is being held captive by the large man, who casually removes his head before their shocked eyes. They try to steal the head, but are frightened by its strange screams, and they arrive on the warehouse roof just in time to see Checker sucked into a spaceship as the "light" leaves the large man's body, leaving him confused. They report back to Lafrey, who agrees that they have completed their two-day assignment, but both men declare that they wish to stay with the Bureau and uncover the rest of the mystery as partners. Max then spots a screen on which several people with "abduction stories" are being monitored – including his wife, Claire. Commercials deleted.
