AMERICAN CRIME: SEASON THREE, EPISODE ONE {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The third season premiere in this dramatic anthology series examining social and political issues in modern-day America. In this episode, a body is found in a river as a number of undocumented workers cross the California desert. Luis Salazar, who does not speak English, insists that he is willing to pay whatever it takes to get to North Carolina. Elsewhere, social worker Kimara Walters tries to bargain down her cable bill before being called away to assist Ishmael, an underage sex worker. She attempts to find him a place to stay, but he insists that he is "not a victim" and rebuffs her assistance. The Hesby family learns that their farms are losing business to their cheaper competitors and, realizing that they must somehow demand more work for less money from their employees, matriarch Laurie Ann instructs her staff to recruit more workers, ideally undocumented immigrants who will not make demands. Crew chief Isaac Castillo drives around and eventually encounters Coy Henson, a young drug addict in need of work, and he urges the young man to consider joining his tomato-picking crew, hinting that he will help Coy acquire narcotics.
A young sex worker, Shae Reese, undergoes a makeover under the pretext of attending a fancy dinner with her "boyfriend" Billy, who is in fact her pimp. Her client for the night insists that the makeup makes her look "too old," and she disassociates from the moment as she enters the bedroom with the man. Kimara is dismayed to learn that her latest round of in-vitro fertilization has not resulted in a pregnancy, and Jeanette, wife of Laurie Ann's son Carson, visits her impoverished sister Raelyn and learns that her husband abruptly departed two weeks earlier. Jeanette tells Carson that she wishes to help her sister find a decent job for the sake of her two children, but Carson reminds her that Raelyn, a recovering addict, has stolen from the family before, and he refuses to allow her a position on the farm. Luis arrives at the Hesby farm and learns that crew chief Matías is now "in charge of him" and will deduct his travel and housing expenses from his meager wages until his debt is paid off, implying that Luis will make very little money from his long days of hard work in the fields.
Acting on Billy's orders, Shae invites a young homeless girl to come "hang out" with the two of them, though the girl declines. She is then taken to another john, whom she seems to remember from an unpleasant past experience, but Billy coldly refuses to accompany her inside. Shae's upsetting encounter with the man is interrupted by a police raid, and Kimara soon arrives to assist the girl, assuring her, as she did Ishmael, that she is not in trouble for her actions. Commercials deleted.
