PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2017: AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ROANOKE {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 34rd William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This PALEYFEST 2017 seminar honors "American Horror Story: Roanoke," the dramatic suspense series with revolving storylines. Host Rene Reyes (director of programs, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and welcomes Tim Stack (senior writer, Entertainment Weekly) to the stage. Stack introduces the episode “Roanoke: Chapter 10,” which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 128483).
After the screening, he moderates the following panelists: co-creator/executive producer Brad Falchuk; executive producer Tim Minear; and cast members Kathy Bates (Agnes Mary Winstead/Thomasin White), Sarah Paulson (Audrey Tindall/Lana Winters/Shelby Miller), Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Dominic Banks/Matt Miller), Denis O'Hare (Elias Cunningham/William van Henderson), Cheyenne Jackson (Sidney James), and Adina Porter (Lee Harris).
The panelists touch on such topics as: Falchuk's fascination with the mysterious story of the real-life Roanoke Colony; the current "AHS" season's connections with past seasons; the conscious decision to move from the opulence and glamour of season five's "Hotel" to a more pared-down narrative; the amped-up secrecy that dominated the season's shooting; the actors' inability to follow the story as it unfolded; Gooding having binge-watched seasons one to five of "AHS" over two weeks before he reported to the set; Bates getting altitude sickness during the production due to one of the mountainous locales; the on-set confusion caused by two actors cast as the same character at different ages; Jackson's inspiration for playing a sleazy producer; Paulson enduring Bates's attempts to perfect her character's accent; passersby not noticing as Bates raised a hatchet and chased a man on Hollywood Boulevard; the actors being asked to shoot footage for the production with their iPhones; acting under co-star Angela Bassett's direction; Paulson juggling three roles for "Roanoke"; and what characters from the "AHS" archive that Bates, Paulson, and Bates would like to revisit.
Questions from the audience lead to a discussion of the following topics, among others: how Paulson makes unlikable characters appealing; Gooding and Paulson moving from adversaries in "American Crime Story" to husband and wife in "Roanoke"; if slavery would be a good future subject for "AHS"; and producers' increased efforts to "connect the dots" between "AHS" seasons.
