GAME OF THRONES: THE WINDS OF WINTER {SIXTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The sixth season finale in this dramatic fantasy series, based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, about the warring royal families of Westeros.
In this episode, the day of the trials arrives and Loras is finally let out of his cell and brought before the court. At the High Sparrow's request, he confesses to everything, including his affair with "traitor" Renly, and agrees to devote himself to the gods as penance. Margaery and Mace are distressed when he receives the ritualistic forehead-carving as part of his conversion. She exclaims to the High Sparrow that Loras was not to be "mutilated." Elsewhere, King Tommen prepares to leave for his mother's trial, but is held back by Ser Gregor. Under the Keep, Qyburn apologizes to Maester Pycelle before setting Varys' "little birds" upon him, and they savagely stab him to death. Lancel, dispatched to find the absent Cersei, is also stabbed by a bird as he comes across the vast cache of wildfire underneath the sept. Above, Margaery desperately urges the High Sparrow to clear the court, aware of the sinister implications of Cersei and Tommen's absences. A dying Lancel is unable to stop the wildfire from igniting, and a massive explosion destroys the entire Great Sept, killing Margaery and Loras, the High Sparrow, and hundreds of others – watched from afar by a satisfied Cersei. She returns to the imprisoned Septa Unella, coolly admitting that she has committed her many crimes "because it feels good." She leaves her prisoner to suffer at Ser Gregor's hands.
Tommen observes the destruction and, aware that his mother was behind it all, ends his life by leaping from a window. Elsewhere, at The Twins, Walder Frey celebrates his victory and his capture of Riverrun, though Jaime begins to question the Lannisters' alliance with the traitorous family. Frey, however, points out that Jaime himself was easily captured by Robb and declares that they are now both "Kingslayers." Cersei learns of her last child's death and numbly orders him buried beside his siblings and grandfather. Sam arrives in Oldtown with Gilly and Little Sam and tells the unamused clerk that he has been sent by Jon to be trained as a maester, now that Aemon and Jeor have both died. At Winterfell, Davos furiously confronts Melisandre about Shireen, and she regretfully admits that the girl was sacrificed to the Lord of Light for nothing.,as Stannis and his army were defeated shortly thereafter. Davos demands her immediate execution, but Jon instead banishes her south. Jon names Sansa the "Lady of Winterfell," reminding her that he is "not a Stark." She apologizes for not telling him of her secret plans with Littlefinger to summon the Knights of the Vale to defeat the Boltons. She adds that she has received a white raven, meaning that winter is truly "here."
Olenna, outraged by Cersei's murder of her family, heads to Dorne and agrees to ally with the Martells – and with Varys. In Meereen, Daenerys informs Daario that he must remain behind and keep the peace while she travels to Westeros and presumably makes a politically advantageous marriage, gently rejecting his offer to remain her "mistress." Tyrion praises her self-sacrifice and states that he believes in her; she officially declares him the Hand of the Queen. Back at The Twins, Walder is horrified to learn that his "moron sons" are in fact within the pie that he has been consuming. Then, the girl serving him reveals herself to be Arya Stark, who strikes another name off her list as she executes him in revenge for the Red Wedding. Littlefinger approaches Sansa at the godswood and again makes his intentions toward her clear, suggesting that they should rule together, as she is the true Stark heir. She makes no reply. Benjen leaves Meera and Bran near the wall, explaining that he cannot cross it, thanks to its magic, and he vows to "fight for the living" in the wars to come. Bran, accepting his role as the "three-eyed raven," has another vision at the heart tree and again visits young Ned at the Tower of Joy. Ned enters and finds his beloved sister Lyanna dying in childbirth, and she makes one final request of her brother. Ned agrees to keep her secret and takes her infant: Jon Snow, confirmed to be the child of Lyanna and Rhaegar Targaryen, making him "not a Stark," but both Ned's and Dany's nephew.
In the Winterfell hall, young Lyanna Mormont scolds the men for not supporting House Stark in its hour of desperate need and pledges her loyalty to Jon, "the King in the North," prompting the rest of the houses to follow suit. Jaime arrives at King's Landing with Bronn and is shocked by the devastation; he witnesses Cersei's coronation on the Iron Throne, realizing that their third and final child has died. Elsewhere, Dany sails towards Westeros, accompanied by her dragons, the Unsullied, the Dothraki, Yara Greyjoy's Ironborn and the rest of her fleet.
