PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: AN EVENING WITH RAY DONOVAN {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This evening celebrates "Ray Donovan," the drama series about a troubled "fixer" and the complications of his professional and personal lives. Host Rene Reyes (director of public programs and festivals, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and introduces the episode "Fish and Bird," which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 127134.)

After the screening, Stacey Wilson Hunt (Hollywood editor, New York Magazine/Vulture) moderates the following panelists: executive producer/writer David Hollander; and cast members Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), Jon Voight (Mickey Donovan), Paula Malcomson (Abby Donovan), Steven Bauer (Avi Rudin), Katherine Moennig (Lena), Dash Mihok (Brendan "Bunchy" Donovan), Kerris Dorsey (Bridget Donovan), Pooch Hall (Daryll Donovan), and Devon Bagby (Conor Donovan).

The panelists touch on such topics as: the show's recent multiple Emmy Award nominations; the cast's "big breaks" in Hollywood, including Hollander's gratitude to producer Scott Rudin, Voight's role in "A View From the Bridge" alongside Robert Duvall, and Mihok's role in "Romeo + Juliet" (1996); the experience of "constant feedback" from the audience of a long-running television series; the actors' connection to their characters and freedom to collaborate and improvise; Schreiber's role as director on two episodes and his sense of the show's rapid production rate, compared to films; how the actors inform the writing of their characters, and Hollander's interest in avoiding redundancy by not relying on actors' "tricks"; Schreiber's challenging need for restraint in playing his taciturn, largely wordless character; Voight's process of getting into character; Malcomson's views on the universality of Abby's cancer fight and its effect on the family; Mihok's use of his own paternal experience in Bunchy's new role as father; Avi's role as surrogate father to Conor; Bagby and Dorsey's views on their foulmouthed characters, including their desperate need for guidance; Schreiber's fatherly attempts to avoid swearing in front of the younger actors; the "lingering mystery" of the loyal, enigmatic Lena; Moenning's view of Lena and Avi as "dysfunctional superheroes" with a strong friendship; Hall's real-life experience as a boxer and sense of the cast and crew as a "championship team"; and the actors' reluctance to "spend a day" with their difficult characters.
