HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER: ANNA MAE {SECOND SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The second season finale in this series of legal dramas about a hard-nosed Philadelphia law professor who recruits her students to work in her firm – leading to their entanglement in a variety of ethically questionable schemes.

In this episode, the students panic when Annalise suddenly leaves Philadelphia to visit her family in Memphis. In the past, the mysterious Lisa Cameron offers Frank a small fortune to plant a listening device on Annalise — which, after her snide comment about his "white-trash future," he does. Annalise's sociable mother Ophelia throws an impromptu get-together to celebrate her daughter's return; Annalise is furious to see that her father Mac, who abandoned the family after she accused his brother Clyde of rape, has returned and rekindled his relationship with Ophelia. Nate tells the students that Todd has obtained an arrest warrant on unknown charges against Annalise. Wes tells Laurel of the bombshell news regarding his biological father, though she assures him that Wallace Mahoney has "nothing to do with who he is." Annalise argues with her sister Celestine about their father's return and is stunned by a visit from Nate, who warns her about the warrant before being dragged into dinner by Ophelia.

Oliver investigates the warrant as Michaela and Asher try to process their impulsive hookup. When the warrant is found to have redacted information, they guess that "a rat" has been informing on Annalise. Ophelia and Mac interrogate Nate, pointing out that their three kids have not yet provided grandchildren. Annalise finally confesses to her mother that she had a son who died. Bonnie warns Frank not to "do anything stupid." In the past, when Lisa listens in on Annalise and Eve's conversation about the case, she informs Wallace — who orders her to "take care of it," leading to the not-so-accidental car crash that kills Annalise's son. Ophelia awakens Annalise at night and urges her to write a letter to her son; a tearful Annalise explains that his name was Sam Jr. Mac tries to apologize to Annalise, promising that he is back with Ophelia for good, though Annalise is scornful. She receives dozens of phone messages from her students, warning her about Todd's plans and explaining that they have identified "the rat": Caleb, who was never missing at all.

Annalise departs Tennessee and heads back to Philadelphia, where she meets with Todd and laughs off the charges against her. She reveals that his source, Caleb, is a serial killer, as proven by the fitness tracker provided by Philip, which places him at the scenes of his parents' and aunt's murders. A jailed Catherine confesses to Nate that she is in love with her adoptive brother and covered for him as he used Philip's DNA and gun to frame him. Annalise urges Todd to take credit for solving the case by using Philip's solid evidence. Trapped, Caleb takes his own life, and Oliver secretly rejects Connor's transfer acceptance to Stanford. In the past, a heartbroken Frank confesses his part in the baby's death to an enraged Sam, swearing that he only intended to help cause a mistrial. Sam vows to hide the truth from Annalise — finally explaining why Frank "owed him" a decade later and killed Lila on his orders. Annalise, having learned the truth, sadly tells Bonnie that Frank "has to go," and Laurel discovers that Frank has apparently fled. Elsewhere, Wes confronts Wallace Mahoney and announces that he might be his son, seconds before Mahoney is gunned down by an unseen person. Includes commercials and promos.
