WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: DISNEYLAND 60 (TV)

Summary

This televised musical special celebrates the sixtieth anniversary of the opening of Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. The program begins as dancers perform "Be Our Guest" from "Beauty and the Beast" (1991) in a parade in Disneyland's Main Street, after which singer Jessie J. performs "When You Wish Upon a Star" from "Pinocchio" (1940) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Host Helen Mirren describes Walt Disney's idea for and development of the theme park, which opened in July 1955, and several other celebrity guests share memories and experiences from their visits to "the happiest place on Earth." "Dancing With the Stars" winner Derek Hough encourages viewers to download the "Disney Applause" cell phone app, and actress Hilary Duff describes the Lilly Belle train, named for Disney's wife Lillian, that traverses the park. Actor Josh Gad tours the park with help from announcers Bill Rogers and Camille Dixon, sampling the Dole Whip frozen dessert and touring the Dream Suite luxury apartment as well as Walt's own former home overlooking the park. Next, actor John Stamos introduces Fall Out Boy, who performs "I Wan'na Be Like You" from "The Jungle Book" (1967), and actress Bryce Dallas Howard introduces a clip from the upcoming live-action adaptation of "Pete's Dragon" (2016).

Mickey Mouse himself, who made his debut in 1928's "Steamboat Willie," is highlighted in a brief series of clips, and comedian Jimmy Kimmel introduces singer-songwriter Elton John, who performs "Circle of Life" from "The Lion King" (1994) at the Sleeping Beauty Castle. Actor Neil Patrick Harris comments on Disney's partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and encourages viewers to tweet photos of themselves wearing "Mickey ears" to raise money for sick children. Next, country singer Kelsea Ballerini introduces singer Tori Kelly, who performs "Rainbow Connection" from "The Muppet Movie" (1979) alongside Kermit the Frog. Actors Eric Stonestreet, Nolan Gould and the rest of the "Modern Family" cast present a series of tips for first-time park visitors, after which "Scandal" star Kerry Washington comments on Disney's long history of strong female protagonist characters. Next, actors Sabrina Carpenter and Sofia Carson from the upcoming "Adventures in Babysitting" (2016) introduce singer Idina Menzel, who performs her iconic song "Let It Go" from "Frozen" (2013). "Dancing With the Stars" partners Witney Carson and Alfondo Ribeiro then introduce a dance number featuring Ballerini, Hough and Ne-Yo performing a medley of "Part of Your World" from "The Little Mermaid" (1989), "Friend Like Me" from "Aladdin" (1992) and "Step in Time" from "Mary Poppins" (1964), and they are soon joined onstage by "Poppins" star Dick Van Dyke.

Actor Harrison Ford, with help from droid BB-8, previews the new "Star Wars" attractions at Disneyland and Walt Disney World in Florida, after which an orchestra performs a series of pieces from John Williams' iconic "Star Wars" scores, including the main theme and the "Imperial March." Little Big Town then performs "Steve McQueen," and actor Whoopi Goldberg, who notes that she is also turning sixty, comments on the newest rides and attractions at Disneyland. Actors Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman preview their new animated film "Zootopia" (2016), and several Disney animators comment on the long process of bringing their characters to life, including fan favorite Dory in the upcoming "Finding Dory" (2016), the sequel to 2003's "Finding Nemo." Next, actor Kiefer Sutherland introduces the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, who performs "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" from "Fantasia" (1940) from the Walt Disney Concert Hall. "Quantico" star Priyanka Chopra previews the new Shanghai Disneyland Park, set to open in June, and Hough closes the program as Elton John performs "Wonderful Crazy Night." Includes commercials and promos.
