MODERN FAMILY: PLAYDATES (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Alex, Luke and Haley are flustered when Mitch cashes in his "birthday fun day" coupon, expecting an exciting day with the three of them. Cam is amused to see that Lily apparently has a crush on Monte, a young visitor from Canada, and Claire orders Phil not to pick up the check when they go out with Tom and Lisa, a wealthy couple who never seem inclined to chip in for meals. Manny attempts to grow a mustache, and Jay is annoyed to meet Joe's friend's parents Marty and Vicky, whose age difference is even more dramatic than his and Gloria's. Unable to think of any good ideas, the kids use a "star map" to find Barbra Streisand's house as Phil sweats over the unpaid lunch bill, and Jay grows annoyed as the much-older Marty attempts to talk with him about "the good old days." Cam invites Monte and his parents over again and gives Lily some playful advice about flirting, and when Mitch and the kids arrive at the diva's home, they find that she has sold it – to noted actor Ray Liotta.

Cam is shocked to find that Lily's crush is not on Monte but on his father Rob, and that he has inadvertently urged her to flirt with an adult man. Gloria confronts Jay about his annoyance with Marty, pointing out that she and Vicky are also both relatively older mothers who must stick together. After several hours, Phil finally cracks and pays the bill, and when Lisa and Claire agree that Tom's behavior is tacky, Phil admits that he lost a bet to Tom and must pay for five meals – a bet that involved both of their unknowing wives. Disappointed not to be recognized by the three teens, Ray Liotta takes the four of them to Barbra's new house, and Mitch receives a wonderful birthday present after all when he briefly talks to the famed chanteuse over her intercom. Later, Marty proves that he may be more up-to-date than Jay is after all. Includes commercials and promos.
