GOLDBERGS, THE: A CHRISTMAS STORY (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a dysfunctional Pennsylvania family in the 1980s. In this episode, the Goldbergs' less-than-thrilling Hanukkah traditions pale yet further in comparison to the idyllic Christmas celebrations of their "perfect" neighbors, the Kremps. Adam is happy to have some rare alone time with Barry to play "Ball Ball," an odd game of their own creation, but he is frustrated to find that Barry now prefers to spend time with girlfriend Lainey. Beverly announces that they will "spice things up" by celebrating a new holiday, "Super-Hanukkah," which sounds curiously similar to Christmas. The kids are pleased with the extravagant decorations and improved level of presents, but Pops is outraged to see that Beverly has all but abandoned their traditions. Lainey graciously bows out when Adam complains that the holidays are "the only time Barry is nice to him," but when Barry remains determined to spend time with his girlfriend, Adam employs a ruthless strategy and challenges his brother to a dare, knowing that he cannot resist.

Pops debut his new character, "Hanu-Claus," who brings everyone down with his "super-sad" recollections of the oppressive history of the Jewish faith. Adam's plan backfires when he finds himself stuck to a frozen pole alongside Barry, à la "A Christmas Story," and when Beverly accidentally burns down her Hanukkah bush/tree, she finally admits that the Goldbergs "suck at family." Barry and Adam eventually make up, deciding to value their brotherly time together, and resort to extreme measures to get themselves home. Lainey joins the two for "A Christmas Story," and Pops and Beverly agree that they both got carried away and will revert to celebrating their own normal traditions. When the Kremps reveal that their Christmas is far from perfect, the Goldbergs invite them out for the grandest Hanukkah tradition: Chinese food on Christmas Day. Later, Beverly takes advantage of Barry's obsession with dares for her own ends. Includes commercials and promos.
