SCANDAL: GET OUT OF JAIL, FREE (TV)

Summary

One in this drama/political thriller about the Pope & Associates crisis management firm in Washington D.C. In this episode, Fitz's impeachment hearing takes a turn for the worse when Mellie is caught lying under oath about her knowledge of Fitz's affair and her bribery of Jeannine Locke. Trapped, Fitz considers invoking executive privilege to avoid testifying, but Cyrus has a bolder idea: that Fitz and Olivia should marry. Elsewhere, Elise visits Rowan in prison, and Rowan, preparing to escape, is ambushed by a would-be assassin. Jake confronts Elise about her secret visits to Rowan, but she reveals that she has been tasked with killing him. Olivia sternly instructs her team to avoid perjury when called to testify, and they all decide to blame the deceased Harrison for the leak of the Locke video. A hospitalized Rowan contacts Olivia, though she quickly rejects him, and Rosen is startled when VP Ross tells him that she is considering resigning. Olivia confides in Abby about the marriage plan, knowing her only other option is to lie under oath if she wishes to protect Fitz from impeachment. Fitz offers Olivia a romantic "do-over" proposal, but she frets that they are not ready for such a commitment, and he puts her on the spot, demanding to know what she truly wants.

Jake is taken aback when Olivia seeks his advice, and Quinn suggests an alternate plan and brings Olivia to see Rowan, who promises to "get her out of this" and put an end to the hearings if she helps him escape from prison, where he is sure that he will be killed. Olivia secretly meets with a highly resentful Mellie and proposes the plan, but Mellie is horrified to realize that "Damascus Bainbridge," the murderer of the 17 jurors – and of Jerry – and Olivia's father are all one in the same. Realizing that Mellie will certainly not help to free her son's killer, Olivia unhappily agrees to the marriage plan, while elsewhere an embittered Jake agrees to help Elise kill Rowan. Fitz and Mellie coldly finalize their divorce, but tensions flare when he suggests that she is at fault for everything, and she viciously declares that he has ruined her life and robbed it of all meaning with his callous actions and "pathetic mediocrity."

Sally Langston eagerly awaits Olivia's testimony as Rosen convinces Ross not to resign after all, pointing out that her great fear of taking the top job suggests an admirable level of humility. Olivia numbly prepares for her quickie wedding and ascension to First Lady, and Jake, arriving at Union Station to take down Rowan, finds that Elise has been murdered. Olivia fails to appear in court and instead reunites with Mellie, who smugly declares that she has had a "realization": that Olivia should assist her in becoming President herself. A triumphant Rowan joins them, having been freed by Mellie after all, while elsewhere the hearings are abruptly brought to a close. Includes commercials and promos.
