DR. KEN: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The pilot of this comedy series about a doctor, his therapist wife, and their family.
Dr. Kendrick “Ken” Park deals with a troublesome patient; he has self-diagnosed himself with hemorrhoids but Ken insists that it is a different condition and he requires a colonoscopy. He discusses it with his wife Allison, a therapist. He admits that he is actually nervous about their daughter Molly taking her driving test, as he fears that being behind the wheel of a car is too dangerous for her, recalling his own disastrous driving experiences as a teenager. Allison assures him that Molly will likely be better off than him. He gets home and is concerned that his son Dave plans to put on a mime performance for his school’s talent show, believing that it will earn him intense ridicule from his peers. Allison, however, feels that they should support his creativity. Molly arrives home, announcing that she has passed her driver’s test. Allison is ecstatic, although Ken makes his disapproval quite clear. He attempts to prevent her from taking his car out the following night, but Allison convinces him otherwise, and he finds that Molly is much better informed about driver safety than he imagined.
Ken attempts to console himself about his decision to let Molly borrow his car, but his co-workers instill paranoia in him and he decides to download an app for his phone to allow him to track Molly’s whereabouts. Ken’s boss Pat talks to him about a patient he offended the previous day who is threatening to sue the HMO. Pat orders that Ken apologize to the patient in order to placate him. Ken discovers that Molly did not lie about her plans, and he feels guilty for spying on her. That night Allison discovers that Ken downloaded the app and is furious, believing that it demonstrates a lack of trust both in Molly and in her. His app indicates that she has gone downtown and he drives off in search of her, intending to ground her. He attempts to locate her at a rave, but is arrested by an undercover policeman after he comes under the mistaken impression that Ken is attempting to purchase drugs. Later Ken’s family comes to pick him up from the police station; Molly explains that she thought about going to the rave but changed her mind, and her friend went instead of her with her phone accidentally left in her jacket. Ken apologizing for not trusting her enough and letting his concerns about her override his better judgment. The next day Ken returns to work and the patient he insulted comes back to apologize, explaining that he got the colonoscopy Ken recommended, saving him from potential colon cancer. Ken also intervenes in Dave’s talent show to prevent him from humiliating himself. Commercials deleted.
