Summary
The first season finale in this comedy series, inspired by the memoir by chef Eddie Huang, about a Taiwanese immigrant family and their attempts to build a "perfect" American life in 1990s Florida.
In this episode, Jessica's masterful assimilation into American culture is waylaid when Louis refuses to join the North Orland Country Club, feeling that it is too expensive. Honey and Marvin suggest that making personal connections at the club could be financially advantageous, but Jessica is stunned when the couple states that they sometimes "forget" that the Huangs are Chinese. At school, Eddie tricks Brian into switching assignments with him for World Cultures Day, confident that reporting on Jamaica will be an easy A. Emery and Evan worry that they have been "too awesome for too long" and scramble to find new ways to earn Jessica's praise; Jessica decides that the family is forgetting their heritage and imposes a strict new China-centric home life, including extracurricular Mandarin classes for the boys.
Louis begins to change his mind about the country club when he meets some of its wealthy members, but Jessica, having demanded that Principal Hunter switch Eddie's assignment to China, declares that their children cannot grow up doing mainly "white things." A resentful Eddie does the bare minimum for his China project, and Louis, determined to move ahead with his second "Cattleman's Express" location, covertly maintains his new membership at the country club. Jessica is disappointed to realize that she too has become overly fond of many aspects of American culture and sadly allows Eddie to report on Jamaica after all. Emery and Evan decide to partner up to create a fridge-worthy art project for their mother. At World Cultures Day, Louis and Jessica are delighted to overhear Rastafarian Eddie sternly defending China's cultural and historical importance when one of his friends makes an insulting joke. Though Eddie receives an F for forgetting to actually discuss Jamaica, Jessica assures him that she is proud of him, much to the younger brothers' disgust. Later, the family solidifies their new lives with a Florida vanity plate. Includes commercials and promos.
