HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER: FREAKIN' WHACK-A-MOLE (TV)
Summary
One in this series of legal dramas about a hard-nosed Philadelphia law professor who recruits her students to work in her firm – leading to their entanglement in a variety of ethically questionable schemes.
In this episode, the students panic as Asher, searching for the missing trophy, very nearly catches them in the act of moving Sam's body; he is then distracted by a surprising phone call. In the past, Wes skips class after his furious confrontation with Annalise over Sam's identity as Lila's "Mr. Darcy." Annalise instructs the remaining Keating Four to assist her with an appeal for David Allen, her client who has spent 21 years on death row for the murder of his girlfriend, Trisha Stanley. Asher is disturbed to learn that David was sentenced by none other than his own father, Judge Bill Millstone. When Annalise visits Wes, he threatens to tell the police about Sam's affair with the dead girl if Annalise does not find the absent Rebecca. Bonnie observes the tension between Charlie and Laurel, and Wes joins David's case. The students track down David's former attorney, who calls the case "unwinnable," and various witnesses, including Linda Morelli, who describes seeing David leaving the scene of the crime with the murder weapon.
Further research suggests that Judge Millstone ignored perjured evidence and unfairly convicted David because of a possible racial bias, though Asher firmly denies that his father acted immorally. Annalise is distraught to learn that David's sole alibi, an addict named Jason Watkins, has since died of an overdose. Asher is devastated when his father cannot bring himself to deny accusations of misconduct. Asher bargains with Annalise to keep his father's name out of the case – and demands the trophy – and then reveals that Senator Art Trucco was involved in the conspiracy. For some reason, he pushed Judge Millstone to convict David on shaky evidence. Bonnie sternly tells Laurel to stop toying with Frank's emotions, and the students learn that Trisha was fighting against Senator Trucco's gentrification plans at the time of her death. In addition, Linda currently lives in a building owned by Senator Trucco's real-estate group.
At the appeal, Annalise aggressively questions Linda, believing that she lied about seeing David at the scene in exchange for free rent from the senator. She then accuses the senator of murdering Trisha and framing David. Though the judge upbraids Annalise for her behavior, he agrees that Linda's testimony is no longer reliable and immediately sets David free. Annalise then tells Wes that new evidence – in fact planted by Charlie on her orders – suggests that Griffin killed Lila out of jealousy over her affair with Sam. Laurel heeds Bonnie's advice and coldly tells Frank that she is "not into him." Rebecca, having returned home, is shocked to learn of the fabricated evidence, but Wes reminds her that she is indeed innocent and must be proven so. Sam is surprised to see the lengths to which Annalise has gone to protect him, and she breaks down as she admit that she still loves him despite his actions. Elsewhere, Nate observes footage of Charlie planting Lila's phone in Griffin's car. In the future, Asher's surprise caller is revealed to be Bonnie, with whom he has a one-night stand. A tearful Annalise then calls her, lamenting that "something terrible" has happened. Includes commercials and promos.
